"Full-Time" Employees Under the Affordable Care Act
The House voted on April 3rd to define a "full-time" employee under the PPACA as one who works at least 40 hours per week.
Stay tuned for developments in the Senate, which is less likely to support the measure, and the President, who may still veto it.
|
Workplace Harassment
Employers are responsible to prevent and correct a hostile work environment, even when the hostile environment originates with someone who is not a company employee.
It is important to cover third-party harassment training with supervisors and managers, who are likely in the best position to learn about and end the harassment.
|
The Interactive Process
Two quick pointers on the ADA's interactive process.
First, it's not a one-time event. Employers should continue the process as often as an employee's situation changes, especially where a change may lead to discharge.
Second, document every step of the process as it occurs. Real-time documents are powerful eveidence that the company did the right thing under the ADA.

Letter From The President
|

Dear HR Colleagues and Business Leaders,
Welcome to the Michiana SHRM Chapter! It is hard to believe half the year is over. As you read our 3rd quarter newsletter, attend our professional programs, meet our board members, join our committees and connect with your peers, you will see the value that our organization will bring to you as a member of Michiana SHRM. We are committed to the ongoing development and engagement of the HR professional in the Michiana Region, and it starts with you joining our efforts.
As we continue to bring you excellent professional development programs; we stand on our foundation and vision: "Establish the Michiana Chapter of SHRM as the premier resource for the HR profession in the community we serve". We are striving to do this through our Strategic three year plan which we have outlined in our goals:
- Promote and provide Human Resources tools, knowledge, support, and development to businesses of all sizes and industries in our community.
- Encourage business leaders to engage with Michiana SHRM so we may demonstrate the Human Resources professionals' value as Strategic Business Partners
- Advance the Human Resources profession by consistently providing relevant educational tools and resources.
- Promote careers in Human Resources as dynamic, innovative, and diverse choices for future business professionals.
We consistently work toward this vision by including Senior HR and business leaders from the region in our professional development programs; by elevating and leveraging our brand through partnerships with organizations with similar strategies related to the HR profession, and by striving to increase membership to help provide depth, breadth, and knowledge within our organizational structure.
We are working to accomplish this by partnering with Michiana Human Resource Association, Leadercast and Pfiel to bring certified programming to both St Joseph and Elkhart County making us a true Michiana resource for Human Resource professionals. In May, we held the Active Shooter program with the highest attended meeting this year and WNDU and WNIT news coverage. In June, our off month with the National SHRM Conference, we sponsored and certified the MHRA meeting where Allison Fox discussed "Intellectual Property."
The third quarter starts off with our July meeting covering, "A Business case for Interns" (trust me an eye opener and company value you don't want to miss). August is our second off month with Indiana State SHRM Conference in Indy. September brings "Attracting, Training and Developing Talent". The Diversity Team will be holding their second annual job fair. We have our 5th Leadership Forum sponsored by Faegre Baker and Daniels and 14th Annual Conference at the Century Center with Andy Masters as our Key Note speaker sponsored by Gibson and Specialized Staffing. Early Bird registration ends July 31st don't miss out on the savings and register now!!!
In closing, I hope you will find the value of the Michiana Chapter and either join or renew your membership. If you're an existing member maybe look for ways you might be able to volunteer to help the chapter achieve its goals or maybe some of your own. I thank you for taking the time to learn more about our chapter through our website and staying connected with our social media. I'm honored to be the President of one of the most prestigious chapters in the country. I look forward to your comments and suggestions, and welcome you to share them at Michiana.shrm.org

Superior Merit Award Winner!

Story by Amanda Conte
Superior Merit Award Winner - IUSB!
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has awarded a Superior Merit Award designation to the Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) SHRM student chapter for providing exceptional growth and development opportunities to its student chapter members.
The SHRM student chapter merit award program exists to encourage development of more effective student chapters and to promote outstanding activities and projects by student chapters.
The IUSB Society for Human Resource Management student chapter is quickly becoming a visible, active student organization. They hold meetings twice a month where they conduct career management activities, host guest speakers, raise funds, and provide knowledge-sharing opportunities, which compliment what their student members are learning in the classroom.
This past Spring semester, they hosted Meagan Thornburg (IUSB Career Services), Tom Searcy (Through Eagles Eyes, Inc.), Steve Eller (Beacon Health System), and Lisa Kindred (Indiana Tech).
A number of club members also had the great pleasure of attending the 2014 Regional SHRM Conference due to very successful fundraising in the Fall semester. Furthermore, with these funds, the IUSB Society for Human Resource Management was able to donate a portion of their profits to the local Michiana SHRM and contribute to the national SHRM Foundation.

Thank you Volunteers
- Workforce Readiness Committee

Story by Alison Fox
The Michiana SHRM Workforce Readiness Committee would like to thank its many volunteers for the recent projects with Elkhart Memorial High School and Five Star Life. We've received great feedback and plan to continue both of these projects during the next school year. Thank you all for getting involved in these very important workforce readiness efforts in our community!
The HR Professionals below presented "Job Search Basics" to approximately 275 students at Memorial High School in Elkhart on April 24, 2014. The presentations covered tips on finding employment, an interviewing demonstration, and information about applications and resumes. A special thank-you goes to Karen Wagner for all her efforts coordinating this event.

By David Seymour
Social Security Public Affairs Specialist
It's a common term, but do you know all the different parts? As HR professionals, you may be asked by your employees. Giving them proper information can save them time and money! Here are some of the basics:
Medicare is health insurance for people receiving Social Security who are age 65 or older or those who have received Social Security disability benefits for more than two years. Some people are covered only by one of the four parts of Medicare; others opt to pay extra for more coverage.
The four parts of Medicare are parts A, B, C, and D.
Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and home health care. Most people get Medicare Part A premium-free since it was earned by working and paying Social Security taxes.
Part B (Medical Insurance) helps cover services from doctors and other outpatient health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and some preventive services. Most people pay a premium for Part B.
Part C (Medicare Advantage) allows you to choose to receive all of your health care services through a provider organization. These plans include all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B, usually includes Medicare prescription drug coverage as part of the plan, and may include extra benefits and services for an extra cost. You must have Part A and Part B to enroll in Part C. Monthly premiums vary depending on your state, private insurer, and whether you select a health maintenance organization or a preferred provider organization.
Part D (Medicare prescription drug coverage) helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Many people pay a premium for Part D. However, people with low income and resources may qualify for extra help from Social Security to pay the premium and deductible. To see the qualifications, visit www.ssa.gov/prescriptionhelp.
Premiums
As stated earlier, most people won't pay a premium for Part A. For Part B, most people will pay a monthly premium of $104.90, the same as it was in 2013. Some high-income individuals; however, will pay more than the standard premium. Your Medicare Part B premium also can be higher if you do not enroll when you are first eligible, also known as your initial enrollment period. There is also a $147 deductible for Medicare Part B coverage. Premiums for Part C and D vary.
Delaying Part B
You can delay enrollment and sign up for Medicare Part B at a later time without paying higher premiums under the following conditions:
- In any month you are covered under a group health plan based on your own current employment or the current employment of any family member; or
- Within eight months after your employment or group health plan coverage ends, whichever comes first.
- If you are disabled and working (or you have coverage from a working family member), the same rules apply.
Medicare & Affordable Care Act
It's important to note that people who have Medicare coverage are not affected by the Affordable Care Act. Medicare is not a part of the Affordable Care Act's Health Insurance Marketplace. If you are a Medicare beneficiary, your Medicare benefits are not changing. You do not need to replace your Medicare coverage with Marketplace coverage. For more information about the Marketplace, visit www.healthcare.gov .
For more information about Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D, visit www.medicare.gov. Or read our publication on Medicare at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs.
We wish the members of Michiana SHRM all the best in 2014 and hope that you are successful in meeting your own goals and resolutions. If one of them is to do business with Social Security, or help one of your employees to do so, we will continue to strive to provide the best and most secure customer service possible.
Learn more about Social Security and what we do for you at www.socialsecurity.gov.
