YOUTH SUPERIOR

CHAMPION

After four long years and many many many miles, our congratulations go out to Gabrielle Oddo and Pride Heat of the Night.  At the end of 2011, they were contacted by TWHBEA that they missed their superior achievement by (2) points, So, in 2012, they dug in their heels and finished up their Youth Superior Versatility Achievement award.  They join the ranks of great Michigan youth riders such as:

Kaila Buck
Whitney Bonham
Chelsea Bonham
Lindsey Bremer
Rachel Csatari
Erica Meadowcroft
Phillip Shapton
Kailey Swiger

Design Silver Shadow
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to another great Michigan Tennesee Walking Horse.  On February 16, 2013, Designs Silver Shadow was humanely laid to rest after a severe bout with colic.  Shadow was owned, loved, trained and ridden by lifetime member, Ray Root Jr and his granddaughter Teralee Wood.  Shadow was a staple in the showring bringing home many blue ribbons.  Our deepest sypmathies go out to Ray and Barb Root Jr and Teralee Wood.

Greetings!

Can you smell it?  Can you feel it?  Spring is just around the corner!  Tack sales are popping up everywhere and horse owners are getting ready for the new batch of foals due to arrive any time.  The Michigan winter is breathing its` lasts breath of snow and ice and slowly turning to longer days and warmer weather.  March gives way to the Stallion Expo, early trail rides and the ever looming....spring training!  Line up your coggins tests, shot and worming schedules and call the farrier.  Trail and Rail season is getting under way!

Sincerely
Susan Fenner

Trail Ride anyone?

It's that time of year to start planning our ride season!
I would like to have a schedule of Trail Riding Events soon, so that we can hand it out at our functions and post it to the web.

Could you help me by planning a few outings per region? They can be
trail logo with colors as simple as day rides with brown bag lunch or weekend campouts. I found an easy way to do this is to partner with a trail riding association of your local parks. Most of them have their events scheduled now and would be happy to have WHAM attend. That way we are supporting them, the parks and getting exposure for WHAM.

Those of you that are avid trail riders, I urge you to host a ride this year at the location of your choice.

Please email me your events before March 5 so we can have the schedule ready for the March 8th Stallion Expo.  If you miss March 4th, that's okay, please send me information as soon as you can.

Thanks for your help supporting WHAM On The Trails!

Spring Safety and Equine First Aid

In like a lamb and out like a lion.  That is the age-old saying about March in Michigan.  Along with checking your tack and making repairs and updates so that you are ready for the trail or the rail, don't forget your transportation.  Make an appointment with your local mechanic or garage to have them check over your vehicle and trailer.  A little bit of maintenance in the spring makes for a safe traveling season for both you and your horse.

What's in your horse first aid kit?  Doing a quick google search can provide a bevvy of sites for a total list, but the following items should be stocked every spring:
  • Thermometer
  • Bute
  • Banamine (paste and injectible)
  • Antibiotics (powder and injectible)
  • Antiseptic wound cleaner (betadine, novalsan)
  • Scissors (cutters)
  • Gauze, cotton or other absorbent padding
  • Clean stable wraps (vet-wrap)
  • Zinc Oxide creams (sunburn prevention)
  • Salts (Epsom salts)
  • Probios, cough-calm/windaid, electrolytes
  • Syrynge and needle
  • Boot (for a thrown shoe!)

One last thing, don't forget to check the expiration date on all of your salves, injectibles, pastes and supplements.  If the date is coming due or past due - throw it away and purchase new.  Don't be caught on the rail or on the trail without a simple equine first aid kit - it could be your horses life you are saving!

The Walking Horse Association of Michigan has been in existance since 1954.  WHAM supports the breeding, training, riding and pride of ownership of the Tennessee Walking Horse.  Whether you are on the trail or on the rail - there is nothing like riding on a walking horse...they are the smoothest rides on earth!
