JEANERETTE, La. --- The Jeanerette Museum will present the history talk, "Natural and Spiritual Healing Traditions of South Louisiana" at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 500 Main St. in Jeanerette.
University of Louisiana at Lafayette cultural anthropologist Ray Brassieur will discuss the traditional healing practices found in south Louisiana. Even though these practices have competed with scientific medicine for hundreds of years, many of them remain with us today.
"We will briefly discuss spiritual treatments such as those provided through the prayers of local traiteurs, as well as magical practices involving charms and special objects," Brassieur stated. He will also discuss the use of traditional plant therapies within the Cajun, Creole and Native American communities. Today there is renewed interest in the use of medicinal plants as various treatments are being sought.
Brassieur's interests include the study of traditional plant knowledge, Louisiana ethnobotany and research involving local food movements. He spearheaded the development of the Healer's Garden at Vermilionville in Lafayette. He serves as a Science Team member of the South Louisiana Ethnobotany and Diabetes Collab, a group he helped to form in partnership with UL Lafayette, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Rutgers and the USGS Wetland Research Center.
The history talk on healing traditions is being held free of charge and is suitable for an adult audience. Seating, however, may be limited.
