Shadows-on-the-Teche Announces Plein Air Competition Artists
Shadows Plein Air Artist Painting
NEW IBERIA, La. --- Shadows-on-the-Teche is pleased to announce the artists have been selected for the Plein Air Competition scheduled for March 12-19, 2016.

The phrase plein air describes a style of art created in the open air, a process much different than producing canvases in the studio. Artists must deal with shifting angles and tones of light as well as adverse weather conditions.

Weeks Hall, the last owner of the Shadows, was an artist who engaged in many styles of art including plein air. To continue the tradition of art at the Shadows and in the community, the Shadows held its first plein air competition last year.

The selected artists reside in states across the South including Virginia, Maryland, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The artist traveling the farthest distance is from Quebec, Canada.  

 

All artists will be coming to New Iberia to the Shadows Visitor Center on March 12 to have their blank canvases marked with the official Shadows Plein Air dated stamp before heading out into the community and the surrounding area to paint. They can paint pictures from Saturday, March 12 to Thursday, March 17 when they will submit their two best to be judged by artist and instructor Roger Dale Brown who is based in Nashville, Tenn. Brown is the recipient of numerous awards for his painting. He exhibits his work nationally and teaches plein air, studio, figurative and still life art.    

 

 

The works turned in for judging will be exhibited at the Shadows Visitor Center in New Iberia beginning Friday, March 18 from 1-5 p.m. and again on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The gala/auction on Saturday, March 19 is where the competition winners will be announced and prizes awarded. Tickets for the Plein Air Gala/Auction are $50 per person and are available at the Shadows Visitor Center.

 


In addition to the competition and gala/auction, a paint out will be held at the Shadows-on-the-Teche on Friday, March 18 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This paint out is free and open to all artists.
