Jeanerette Museum: Indian Mounds Along Bayou Teche Talk |
JEANERETTE, La.--- The Jeanerette Museum will host "Indian Mounds Along Bayou Teche," a presentation celebrating Archaeology Month, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Leading the presentation is University of Louisiana Lafayette Professor Mark Rees. Rees is an archaeologist, Director of the Louisiana Public Archaeology Lab and Nalley Board of Regents Support Fund Professor of Social Sciences at UL Lafayette.
Rees holds a Ph. D in Anthropology with a concentration in Archaeology from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in Historical Archaeology from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. His research interests include the late prehistoric and colonial periods in the Lower Mississippi Valley, monument building in complex societies and geophysical remote sensing.
Rees edited Archaeology of Louisiana (LSU Press, 2010), co-edited Plaquemine Archaeology (University of Alabama Press, 2007) and authored numerous articles and book chapters on archaeology in Louisiana and the Southeast.
His recent publications include co-authored works on the Portage Mounds site (Louisiana Archaeology 2015) and Troyville Mound site (The Archaeology of Events, University of Alabama Press, 2015).
He is currently directing an assessment of the effects of an oil spill on coastal archaeological sites and leading the New Acadia Project, a public archaeology initiative to locate and study the 1765 colony of New Acadia in south Louisiana.
