Say "Good Morning Baltimore" with IPAL's "Hairspray!"

NEW IBERIA, La. --- Iberia Performing Arts League will present their annual summer youth musical, "Hairspray," directed by Vincent P. Barras.

With 1960's style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues, the production will run July 16-26, 2015 with performances at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are $10 and may be obtained at  Delaune's Pharmacy, Paul's Flowers, the Daily Iberian's office,by calling the theater or email. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on the day of the performance.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, Md., plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and meets a colorful array of characters. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on that era in American society, and is filled with great music, dance, and acting. Music is by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film "Hairspray."

The production is supported in part by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council, ,through the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts administered by the Acadiana Center for the Arts.
