NEW IBERIA, La. --- In June 2014, artist Lynda Frese and musician David Greely began researching documents and objects in the collection of Shadows-on-the-Teche with the objective of creating original works of art based on these collections. In May 2015, the public will have two opportunities to view and hear the results of Frese and Greely's investigations.
On May 8 from 6 - 9 p.m., the Shadows will host a preview party catered by French Press. Tickets are required and are available at the Shadows or online at http://artandshadows.ticketleap.com/preview.
The following day on May 9, from 2 - 8 p.m., visitors can view and hear the results of Frese's and Greely's year-long process. People can engage in or observe activities related to art and music produced by the artists. They can attend with a suggested donation of $5.
A collage project, a presentation about music education and a photography activity will all be offered for public participation. In addition, Frese will conduct explanatory tours of her exhibit and Greely will present a concert of his original work at sunset. Frese has connected with clothing in the Shadows collection, reflecting on a child's christening gown or a young adult's dress as personal connections to history, along with the layers of political and social conditions which shaped the individual's world. Through her work in collage, Frese has explored the story of the past.
In a similar manner, Greely has identified individuals in the Shadows history whose stories explain how people may have coped with the experiences of each of their lives. For example, Greely has been drawn to Sampson, an enslaved man who played the fiddle. In writing Sampson's song, he explored how Sampson may have used his musical skills to improve his life's conditions.
