"What I like most about volunteering at Shadows is the flexibility which allows me to participate at my convenience while also being fun and challenging," said Carolyn Bienvenu, a retired teacher who is involved in numerous community activities.
Volunteer tour guides are always in high demand at the Shadows. However, volunteers can select one or several types of volunteer activities. Tour guides are always needed, but retired secretary Phyllis Murphey said, "I don't present tours...in fact, no talking to groups, but I will walk."
In Phyllis' case, walking has taken several forms. She leads students from one activity to another in the Shadows gardens, but she also drives to a variety of schools to disseminate information to teachers and students. She distributes Arts & Crafts Fair flyers to various community locations. At events, she will greet guests and accept admission fees.
With only three full-time staff members, the Shadows requires numerous volunteers to accomplish all of the events and programs on its yearly calendar. If someone has one hour or one hundred to contribute to the historic site, a task awaits. Plan to attend the Shadows Sip and Snack Session where current volunteers will be available to talk about the variety of tasks which need to be accomplished. It's also fun to talk to each other!
