Join us July 1st to celebrate the completion
of City Park Access Enhancements "Wallop-Breaux"

NEW IBERIA, La. --- The City of New Iberia will celebrate the completion of City Park Access Enhancements (Wallop-Breaux) Boating Access Grant No. F12AF01187 on July 1, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at New Iberia City Park (near the boat landing). Light refreshments will be served in the Senior Center.

New Iberia City Park Access Enhancement Project began as a grant application to Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries for funding to enhance improvements to New Iberia's major assets (boating and fishing).

Funding was targeted toward the need to improve boating access in Bayou Teche in agreement with the United States Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), for federal monies, known as "Wallop-Breaux funds," through the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act of August 9, 1950 as amended (64 Stat. 430; 16 U.S.C. 777-777k), entitled "Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act," to be used as the 75% federal share by the Sponsor for the planning, construction and/or renovation of the New Iberia City Park Access Enhancement project as per FP&C Project Number 16-01-00-86-6 (Part 5G). Federal/State funding for $261,750.00 and the total project = $349,000.00.

In a letter of support from The Iberia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau , Fran Thibodeaux, executive director acknowledged that the, "Iberia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau wholeheartedly supports the City of New Iberia's request for funding to enhance the boat landing and parking area. Waterway access to visitors is vital to this segment of the tourism marketplace in order to enhance the visitor experience in New Iberia and the region." Thibodeaux further said that she, "looks forward to another tool that will enable the bureau to expand its marketing programs to target boating enthusiasts interested in visiting charming bayou towns like New Iberia by water travel."

New Iberia Mayor Hilda D. Curry said, "The completed project will undeniably provide needed improvements to the heavily used City Park Boat Landing including additional lighting, a new restroom facility, safer parking with handicap accessibility, and the new fishing piers will provide opportunity to both locals and visitors who would like to get closer to the water to enjoy recreational boating and fishing."
