IPAL presents "Tuesdays with Morrie" this weekend
Travis Fontenot as Mitch Albom and Vincent P. Barras as Morrie Schwartz.

NEW IBERIA, La. --- The Iberia Performing Arts League in New Iberia is proud to present three benefit performances of "Tuesdays with Morrie," a two-act play by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom.

IPAL is hosting the show for one weekend, and all proceeds will go to various charitable organizations. Performances are Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 pm, with a Sunday, April 6, matinee at 3 p.m.

"Tuesdays with Morrie" tell the true story of Brandeis Professor Morrie Schwartz who, struck with Lou Gehrigs disease, is visited by former student and famous sports writer Mitch Albom. What begins as a one-time meeting turns into regular Tuesdays sessions covering topics including love, work, aging, communication, openness and values.

The play has been performed all over the world in over 100 languages, and was made into an Emmy-winning movie starring Jack Lemmon (in his last role) and Hank Azaria.

Within the last nine months, it has been presented in Eunice for the Eunice Players' Theatre, at Theatre 810 in Lafayette for Acting Unlimited, in St. Martinville at the Opera House, and most recently in Opelousas at the Opelousas Little Theatre.

The play will feature IPAL veteran Vincent P. Barras as Morrie Schwartz. Joining him is Ville Platte native Travis Fontenot as Mitch Albom, the young sports writer.

"To date, it's my favorite role and certainly the one I've gotten to play the most," Barras said. "I have a lot of friends in New Iberia who have given so much to me; I just wanted to give something back."

The proceeds from the tickets will be divided among the ALS Society, the Daily Iberian's "Help the Helpers" campaign which benefits a number of area non-profit groups, and area school with theater programs.

Tickets for the performance are $10 and can only be purchased at the door. For further information, contact IPAL at 337-364-6114 or email [email protected] . Additional information may be found at Ipaltheater.com

For information on the play, contact Robin Bull at 337-519-4158 or Vincent Barras at 337-519-0865.
