JEANERETTE, La. --- The newly formed Jeanerette Youth Beautification Committee is already in action with its first service date scheduled for Jan. 18 beginning at 8 a.m. All of Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette will be cleaned in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and to beautify the drive for the upcoming parade to be held on Jan. 19, 2014.
Founded by a Jeanerette High School junior, Oscar Vargas, the Jeanerette YBC is comprised of youth volunteers and will concentrate on cleaning and beautifying the city of Jeanerette.
"The Jeanerette YBC is youth envisioned, youth motivated and youth action", Vargas said. "By motivating our youth now, we make a change that will impact our city for generations to come."
Vargas has already received the support of the Jeanerette Chamber of Commerce, the 4-H Club, the city of Jeanerette and more. Volunteers have been signing up daily with 29 youth already enlisted for the Jan. 18 clean up service on Martin Luther King Drive.
The Committee operates as a non profit, funded via donations from private citizens, foundations and businesses in the Iberia Parish area.
