IPAL presents "A Nice Family Gathering"
IPAL A small family gathering play
NEW IBERIA, La. --- The Iberia Performing Arts League will present "A Nice Family Gathering" by Phil Olson as its holiday offering this Christmas. The show opens at the Essanee Theater in New Iberia on Thursday, Dec. 5, and plays for two weekends, closing on Sunday, Dec. 15.

According to director, Mitchell Prudhomme, "This show is not your typical, heart-warming holiday tale. The title is most definitely an oxymoron, describing a family situation that, though at times funny, is at its heart quite serious and emotionally charged. The audience will laugh hysterically throughout the show, but be emotionally touched, or even in tears, by the ending."

"A Nice Family Gathering" is a humorous, yet touching story about a man who loved his wife so much, he almost told her. Set at the first Thanksgiving Dinner after he died, Dad comes back as a ghost, visible only to one of his sons. Mom has invited a date to join them, and comic hijinks inevitably follow. The show is reminiscent of the very successful television series "Modern Family."

Starring are Milton Resweber as Dad, Cindy Hebert as Mom, Vincent P. Barras as older son Carl, Jennifer Young as daughter Stacy, Matt Heyer as younger son Michael, and Brittany Dubois as his wife, Jill. Additional cast members are Donald "Doc" Voorhies as Jerry, Mom's date, and Robin Bull as nosy neighbor Mrs. Enquist.

"The true meaning of both Thanksgiving and Christmas is about loving, giving and sharing," Voorhies notes. "This show displays that without Santa Claus and the usual 'Christmas extravaganza' production. The poignant moments of 'A Nice Family Gathering' will likely stick in your mind long after the tinsel is gone. It is definitely not for young children, but it will be an emotional highlight of this holiday season for anyone who attends."

This performance is supported, in part, by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council, through the Louisiana Divisions of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 and may be obtained at Delaune's Pharmacy, Paul's Flowers, Accentrics on Main Street, by calling the theater at 364-6114, or e-mailing [email protected] and leaving a name, date, and return phone number or email address. This show is not recommended for children.
