NEW IBERIA, La. --- Bring your lawn chair and get ready for an afternoon of drama, comedy and music at the fourth annual "New Iberia Beneath The Balconies."
The Iberia Preservation Alliance and the New Iberia Main Street Program will hold this series of theatrical vignettes and musical performances Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, from 2 - 5:10 p.m. on selected balconies along New Iberia's award-winning Main Street.
"It's an extremely unique event," said Cathy Indest, president of the Iberia Cultural Resources Association, Inc. "New Iberia is one of the only cities in Louisiana, besides New Orleans, that has so many balconies along its main street."
The show will begin at Shadows-on-the-Teche's front gallery (317 E. Main St.), moving down Main Street, and culminating with a musical finale at Bouligny Plaza's Steamboat Pavilion (102 W. Main St.). The Bunk Johnson Brazz Band will once again lead the second-line parade from one balcony to the next. Spectators can purchase food and beverages along the performance route.
Before the event, the public can also enjoy "Lunch, Shopping and Music by the Berry Classics" in downtown New Iberia from noon to 2 p.m. Shops will be open and lunch will be available in Bouligny Plaza and at local restaurants.
The Iberia Cultural Resources Association, Inc., New Iberia Museum Foundation (Bayou Teche Museum), and National Trust for Historic Preservation Shadows-on-the-Teche formed the Iberia Preservation Alliance in 2010 to help preserve the history and culture of New Iberia. "New Iberia Beneath The Balconies" is the primary event benefiting the Alliance.
