IPAL presents "Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr."

NEW IBERIA, La. --- Iberia Performing Arts League will present their annual summer youth musical, Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr., directed by Travis Guillory. This under the sea adventure will run July 18-28 with performances at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and a 3 pm matinee on Sunday at the Essannee Theater, 126 Iberia St. in New Iberia.

Adapted from Disney's 2008 Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, this family-friendly musical is based on the animated 1989 Disney film of the same name and the classic story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. It tells the story of the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel (Kaylon Khamphilavong), who longs to leave her ocean home fathoms below to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father King Triton (Trevor Menard), make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula (Shelby Pelafigue/Abigail Daigle), and convince Prince Eric (Andrew Palmintier) that she's the girl with the enchanting voice.

With the help of her fish friend Flounder (Carlin Sekhani/Olivia Lopez), the hysterically uptight crab Sebastian (Terrance Christian), and the goofy seagull Scuttle (Lanie Marcantel), Ariel discovers the challenges of growing up and the boundaries that even a mermaid might or might not push. This exciting musical journey features the hit songs "Part of Your World," "She's in Love," "Poor Unfortunate Souls," and the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea" along with many new songs from the 2008 Broadway version. The musical's book is by Doug Wright with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman (written for the film), and new lyrics by Glenn Slater.

Supported in part by a grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council ,through the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
