CYPREMORT POINT, La. - Get your fishing gear ready and take your pick between these two fishing rodeos this July.
Fourth of July Fishing Rodeo: July 4 - 6, 2013
The Iberia Rod and Gun Club will hold its 60th annual Saltwater Fourth of July Fishing Rodeo July 4 - 6, 2013, at Quintana Landing, LA 319, in Cypremort Point, La.
Fishermen compete in four divisions: Junior, Inside, Diving and Offshore. Species vary for each division. Participants can start fishing at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday. Offshore divisions may depart no sooner than noon on Wednesday. Scales will be open under the pavilion from 3 - 6 p.m. on Thursday, 1 - 6 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday. Food and beverages will be sold on site.
Trophies will be awarded after closing of the scales on Saturday. "Each fish is worth $500 and there are 14 fish in that division," said event planner Chad LeBlanc. "We will be giving away over $10,000 in cash and prizes."
Every child who weighs in a fish in the Junior division will be eligible to win one of five lifetime fishing licenses. Event organizers will hold a drawing on July 6 after closing of the scales. Participants must be present to win.
To celebrate the event's 60th anniversary, a fais-do-do will close the event on Saturday with performances by Leroy Thomas & The Zydeco Runners and The Bad Boys Band from 6 p.m. to midnight under the pavilion.
Anglers can purchase tickets at Cajun Guns & Tackle, Dago's, Hebert's Mini-Mart and Iberia Outboard & Marine Service. The Iberia Rod and Gun Club will sell Calcutta tickets at its Boat Captain's Supper held on July 2 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the American Legion's Hall in Lydia, La.

Denise P. Breaux Memorial Redfish Derby: July 27, 2013
Redfish enthusiasts can compete at the Denise P. Breaux Memorial Red Fish Derby on July 27, 2013, from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. at Quintana Landing, LA 319, in Cypremort Point, La.
Weigh-ins end at 3 p.m. There will be a 40 percent payback of the total amount collected for registration, which will be distributed as follows: 1st place - 35 percent, 2nd place - 25 percent, 3rd place - 20 percent, 4th place - 15 percent, 5th place - 5 percent, and 6th - 10th place - a 12 pack soft ice chest and a cap. $5 Calcutta will receive 50 percent payback.
There will be a Kids Croaker division (age 12 and under) for a lifetime license donated by Buck Fin and Feathers. Participants will receive a towel and a koozie. They can also purchase food and refreshments on site. Event organizers will hold live and silent auctions led by Sen. Fred Mills. Geno Delafose will entertain the crowd from 2 - 7 p.m.
Anglers should register in advance or before 8 a.m. on July 27 ($100 per boat). They can also attend a registration event on July 26 from 6 - 10 p.m. at the Quintana Landing pavilion, which will include refreshments, a redfish courtbouillon dinner and a DJ.
Organizers will distribute all proceeds back to the community through the Denise P. Breaux Memorial Fund. "The Redfish derby was put together in honor of my wife who passed away at 47 years old from liver cancer back in February 2011," said event planner Aaron Breaux. "We have distributed monies to SNAP, Humane Society, Iberia Sports Complex, and we made grants to kids that met criteria, that Denise set before passing away, for their college."
