Pilots helping St. Petersburg boy get liver transplant

By Chris Hopper , Reporter

Article online here

Charmaine Creary and her 9-month-old son Desmond are waiting for the lifesaving call.

[...and Angel Flight pilots will be ready!]

ST. PETERSBURG --

A St. Petersburg boy needs a liver transplant, and thanks to a caring group of people, he has a better chance of getting what he needs.

Charmaine Creary and her 9-month-old son Desmond are waiting for the lifesaving call.

"At any given time he could back into liver failure so we're just hoping to get it as soon as possible," she said.

Desmond's liver does not work, and he desperately needs a new one. When they get the call, time will be precious. They'll have to get to Miami quickly to make it happen.

"As of right now we do not have our own transportation, so and then Miami being four hours away when they call for a transplant they expect you to move immediately," Creary said.

They got that call last week, and they were able to get to Miami shortly afterward thanks to a group of volunteer pilots.

In the middle of the night, at no cost to her, a pilot for the service Angel Flight flew her and Desmond to Miami. Fred Cutting is the man who piloted the plane that night.

"We all have problems in our lives, what happens for me when I see these people I say, 'I don't have any problems,' and I stop feeling sorry for Fred," he said.

Cutting is part of a large group of pilots who volunteer their time and planes to make sure these patients get where they need to be when time is most sensitive.

"From Venice, I remember one guy that got a liver transplant and when we got him there, I found out from him later that they were really two minutes from trashing the liver," said Cutting.

Desmond's last trip didn't ultimately end in a transplant, but Creary said she feels peace knowing they will take her and Desmond back when the time comes.

Angel Flight Southeast arranges approximately 3,000 flights a year. The company works solely on donations to pay for the patient's services.

Kathy,

We just wanted to thank you and the entire Angel Flight team  for a wonderful experience today.  Not only did it save us the tedious 5 hour drive each way to Gainesville but it was a wonderful plane ride we'll not forget.  Mark Sneed was THE BEST pilot!! He explained everything to us, he told us to feel free to ask questions and calmed our nerves during some bumpy weather we had.

We got up there a little early so we were able to check into the clinic early although there was a mix up with Hubert's appointment but after throwing a small tantrum in the office, he was able to see the doctor.  He's doing extremely well post-transplant and will be seen every other week in Gainesville now.

So, thank you again for everything!!

Best Wishes,

Hubert Allred and Terry Austin

May 29 - Bob Koch posts his progress on Appalachian Trail - Virginia

As published in the Greenwood Festival Chorale:

According to Bo Bowman, Bob Koch has reached Southern Virginia on his quest to hike the Appalachian Trail from start to finish. He would like his hike to help raise funds for the Angel Flight Southeast Organization with which Bo is involved as a pilot (and also a singer in the Greenwood Festival Chorale).

Angel Flight Southeast provides free transportation to people needing to travel distances for medical treatments. The entire trail is 2,185 miles long. He is asking that people make pledges for his hike on a per mile basis.

For example, if he completes the entire hike as he plans, a one cent/mile pledge would amount to a $21.85 contribution, a two cents/mile pledge would amount to a $43.70, a ten cents/mile pledge (as Bob himself and Bo have pledged) would amount to a $218.50 contribution, etc.

If for some unexpected reason he has to quit early, the total donations due will be calculated according to miles completed.

Pledges for Bob's long hike can be made by emailing Bo at archerbo2@gmail.com and letting him know how much you would like to pledge per mile.  All pledges will be appreciated.

Bob from Greenwood, is currently the Past President of the Greenwood Festival Chorale and is taking the summer off to make this "bucket-list" hike he has long wished to accomplish. He and Dan Koenig, Current President, have something in common with this adventure. Dan hiked the upper end of the Trail in 1966 and climbed Mt. Katahdin the northern-most point of the trail in Northern Maine. Dan has added his pledge to Bob's adventure fundraiser. "It's a great cause," said Dan, "and a wonderful and challenging adventure." We'll keep you updated.

The entire trail is 2,185 miles long. He is asking that people make pledges for his hike on a per mile basis.  For example, if he completes the entire hike as planned:

  • One cent/mile pledge = $21.85
  • Two cents/mile pledge = $43.70
  • Ten cents/mile pledge = $218.50 (Bob himself and Bo have pledged)

To make a pledge, simply email the number of miles and the amount per mile you'd like to pledge.

Once he completes his trek, we'll publish the miles (we fully expect it to be the full 2,185) and send an email back asking for the donation.

Please use the subject line: "Bob Koch trail" and email

Bob's progress as of May 30th,
as depicted on a board at his church.
631 miles so far!

Arranged by Bo Bowman- Thanks Bo!
