Rector's Ramblings

At one point or another, many of us had to read The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer's 14th Century tale of pilgrims on their way from London, England to Canterbury, to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket, at the cathedral.  I say had to, because most of us read it as teenagers, an age when few of us would willingly pull the book off the shelf and give it more than a cursory glance. I struggled through it like everyone else, even with a connection to the text as an Episcopalian, a part of the Anglican Communion, whose birthplace and spiritual home is still at Canterbury.  Little did I know then that I would become intimately familiar with Canterbury later in my life.

I became a teenage pilgrim to the shrine of Thomas Becket when my parish went on a youth pilgrimage (I call it that, but I am aware we didn't call it a pilgrimage back then) to England and France. I thought the story of the murder of Archbishop Becket was interesting, and the sword sculpture to commemorate the place where he was struck down was, to a teenage boy, kind of cool.  I had another opportunity to travel to Canterbury while in seminary, spending nearly a month living on the Cathedral Close (the name for the grounds inside the Cathedral walls) as a part of the Canterbury Scholars study program that gathered Anglican seminarians from around the globe. Because Canterbury is still a pilgrimage site, one of our assignments was to write a paper on pilgrimages in our own culture. As it turned out, the Americans got dismal evaluations of our reflections, to a person.

Worship

X Compline this Summer
This summer, X Church segues into X Compline, which will take place at 8:00 pm on June 15, July 13, August 10 and September 14. Compline is a service of quietness and reflection before rest at the end of the day.  It is a simple office with prayers, scripture, music and meditative silence. Please join us for these spiritually peaceful times of worship and renewal each month.

Baptism
A baptism will be performed on Friday, June 10th for a relative of The Rev. John Thomas. Fr. Thomas will perform the baptism at Christ Church while the family is gathered on St. Simons; they will not be here on a Sunday when baptisms are typically conducted.  Baptism is a community event in the church and so the Thomas family welcomes anyone who wishes to share in this special occasion, to join them in the church at 10:30 am for a brief baptismal service.

Worship Survey

Worship Survey Results - Town Hall SessionsSurveyTownHall

This past Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Father Tom facilitated three Town Hall meetings which were well attended and well received. Unfortunately, because of inclement weather on Monday night, many folks were unable to attend that session. Therefore, we are offering a make-up Town Hall this coming Sunday after the 11:15 am service. If you did not have the opportunity to attend any of the previous meetings, please join us on Sunday.

The earlier presentations included results of the survey data and some initial implications for how to address the need for more room by adding services in the short term and what to investigate over the long term.  Father Tom will work with the Vestry and staff in the coming months to finalize plans about service offerings in the fall.  Survey data will be shared via email shortly, with printed copies by request.  The full data includes 1500 pages of information and can be viewed in the office.

ECW

ECW Happily Announces $70,000 Gift

Dear Christ Church and The Golden Isles Community,

It with great excitement that your ECW announces an outstanding gift of over $70,000 to local and regional charities!  These gifts come from combined proceeds of the 63rd annual Tour of Homes this past March as well as the year-long sales of the Christ Church cookbook.
This is the second year we have been able to reach this record amount in grant awards with more than 30 gifts awarded.

"What a joy it is to be able to grant such a large amount to so many deserving charities in our area that benefit women and children.  This is a gift from our entire community because of the community wide support of our two large projects each year", said Jane Watson, ECW President.  "It takes more than 400 volunteers to put on a huge project like the Tour of Homes and we send out a huge THANK YOU to the many community volunteers who help us with both projects each year.  We want the community to know that this is their gift as well.  Lives will be touched thanks to your time and efforts."

Congratulations, and well done.......for the many hours of volunteering, planning and dedication........our community is the winner.

In His Service,
Jane Watson
ECW President

Formation

Join our New Men's Study Group in June
The Men's Study Group is beginning a new series, Living the Questions, on Wednesday, June 15.  Fr. Tom will convene the group for this study for one hour each Wednesday at 10:30.

Living the Questions is designed to foster learning and shared conversation around the best of today's theological thought.  The series features 35 of today's leading religious voices, presented in short video compilations. Sessions will include 20 minutes of video presentations on a theme, followed by discussion.  The group is open to all men of the parish!  Come check out this new class and explore what's next for Christianity.  For more information, Contact Te Turner: 512-695-4131.

Summer Reading Group
This summer we will explore the book David and Goliath - Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, by Malcolm Gladwell. The group will meet once a month in June, July and August. Mother Becky will lead the group in June, Father Rian in July and Father Tom in August. The starting date will be Thursday, June 16, at 2:00 pm, in the Parish Hall. As we read the book, we will discuss how fear and preconceived notions limit us.  Perhaps it's why Jesus talked so much about fear. It's a great read! Books are available in the office for $13.

GEM's Food Pantry Summer Program Off to a Great Start

GEM's story time and book distribution at St. Athanasius was an enjoyable time for all last Friday, June 3rd. In coordination with food distributions from the Food Pantry at St. Athanasius, GEM will be hosting story time, giving away children's books, and serving a light meal for all those who come to St. A's Parish Hall, each Friday afternoon, at 4:30 pm.  Sessions will take place during the summer months that school is out.  Last year this was a huge success and was well received.  We are collecting children's
books for all ages, new or used, and will need volunteers to read, to help with the distribution of food bags, and to serve dinner.  Book donations may be brought to the church office.

For more information about how you can get involved, please contact The Rev. Becky Rowell: [email protected]
