Rector's Ramblings

What is a Christian voter called upon to do when elections roll around?  We have just had our most recent round of local elections, and I hear that there are some national elections coming up in November?  The term, "Christian voter" has probably been co-opted and abused so many times that we even hesitate to identify as such.  When pundits speak of the Christian vote they usually mean the Evangelical vote, failing to remember that there are millions of mainline and other Christian voters out there who do not identify themselves that way.  But to what extent does or should our Christian faith influence what happens when we stand in front of the electronic voting machines and cast our ballots?  The answer is, of course, a lot.

We may forget, but those who choose to follow Jesus are Christians above any other designation we may also have.  Our Christian identity trumps (no pun intended) our familial relationships, our nationalism, our partisanship, and any other designation we can think of.  Everything we do and say, in theory, is filtered through our Gospel eyes and ears.  Ideally, when we act, we do so aligned as closely with what Jesus would want us to do as we can.  This is what it means to be a disciple of The Risen Lord.  One problem with the political arena is that it is one of the areas in which most of us are still blatantly self-serving and self-centered.

A Wonderful Day of Worship and Renewal at Honey Creek

The Annual Parish Bluegrass Mass and Church Picnic took place this past Sunday, May 22, at Honey Creek. We had a great time worshipping together, enjoying the music of Marshgrass, sharing a lunch of fried chicken with all the sides and rooting each other on during the traditional softball game. We were even treated to a clerical jam session, when Father Tom and Father Rian joined the band, for a spirited rendition of "Man of Constant Sorrow". (Click here to watch.) It was a very special day filled with food, fun and fellowship!

Churchwide Pool Party and CookoutPoolParty

What better way to start off the hot summer than with a cool pool party? Mark your calendar for Friday, June 17, 2016 and join us at Neptune Park, at 5:30 pm, for an evening of splashing in the pool, enjoying a cookout and listening to live entertainment. Please bring your lawn chairs, cold drinks, a side dish or dessert to share and any friends and neighbors who might enjoy a fun evening out. We'll provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, paper products and plastic cups. It should be a great night for outdoor fellowship. Don't miss it!

Join our New Men's Study Group in June
The Men's Study Group is beginning a new series, Living the Questions, on Wednesday, June 15.  Fr. Tom will convene the group for this study for one hour each Wednesday at 10:30.

Living the Questions is designed to foster learning and shared conversation around the best of today's theological thought.  The series features 35 of today's leading religious voices, presented in short video compilations. Sessions will include 20 minutes of video presentations on a theme, followed by discussion.  The group is open to all men of the parish!  Come check out this new class and explore what's next for Christianity.  For more information, Contact Te Turner: 512-695-4131.

Summer Reading Group
This summer we will explore the book David and Goliath - Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants, by Malcolm Gladwell. The group will meet once a month in June, July and August. Mother Becky will lead the group in June, Father Rian in July and Father Tom in August. The starting date will be Thursday, June 16, at 2:00 pm, in the Parish Hall. As we read the book, we will discuss how fear and preconceived notions limit us.  Perhaps it's why Jesus talked so much about fear. It's a great read! Books are available in the office for $13.
