Rector's Ramblings

This week marks a milestone.  Friday is my 20th High School reunion up in Pennsylvania.  I realize that for many of you, twenty years is just a fraction of the years since your own days in high school, but it's still a significant number.  It doesn't make me feel old, per se, but I do wonder where twenty years have gone.   I'm not aware of it being a fast two decades, but it doesn't seem to have been slow either.  I once heard a banker, referring to retirement, proclaim, "A million dollars isn't what it used to be!"  Well, as I sit here and think about it, twenty years isn't what it used to be either.

Again, I'm no Rip van Winkle by any means, but I have enough age on me that I am hitting some decent numbers in terms of history.  20 years since high school, 10 years a priest, 3 years at Christ Church (not as impressive a number, but one of this week's anniversaries, nonetheless.)  I have never been one to live in the past; I don't look back on any period of my life as my golden days (yet), and it would be unlikely that high school will ever rate as such.  In some ways, milestone anniversaries are not that significant, but in others, they are absolutely important and carry a great deal of meaning.

Coffee Hour Hosts NeededCHHN
Coffee Hour is a time of fellowship after the 9:15 a.m. service has ended. It provides a welcoming place to talk to the clergy, to meet new people, and to relax with friends. Our coffee hour hosts provide light refreshments, coffee, tea, and usually a cold drink. We try to include a healthy alternative alongside our sweet treats, so that parishioners with special diets can participate.

Coffee hour teams arrive before each service to start coffee and put together their food items, and then leave the service right after Communion to prepare to serve the refreshments. They clean up afterward. It's fun and easy to do and is a perfect way to meet new people and enjoy fellowship with the Christ Church family.  If you would like to sign up to become a Coffee Hour Host, please let Glenn know. You can either call him at the Parish Office (912-638-8683), or email him at [email protected]
Outreach

"The cupboard is bare."FoodBankHelp
The Food Bank Team did not mince words when asked to describe the current condition of the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Ministry Food Bank, in Brunswick, Georgia. Recent need has depleted the shelves dramatically and the supply of crucial staples, such as rice, canned vegetables, canned tomatoes, canned fruits, canned meats and even peanut butter* and jelly, needs to be replenished. The stock of non-perishable food is so low that scarce funds are being used to purchase food for distribution.

Christ Church has supported the Food Bank Ministry at St. Athanasius for six years and for those who have already made food donations recently, thank you for your generosity! For those who have not had a opportunity to donate this month, the empty shopping basket in the Parish Hall awaits your food contributions. Monetary donations will be greatly appreciated, as well. Please help us restock the pantry that feeds so many of our neighbors in need.

(*For food items donated in jars, plastic jars are preferable to glass.)

Glynn Episcopal Ministries Needs You
Glynn Episcopal Ministries (GEM) has a lot of exciting things going on this spring and summer, and we need your help.  GEM is comprised of the Episcopal churches in Glynn County, who have come together to share resources, energy, and funding to accomplish the work of the Gospel in one of our most challenging neighborhoods.

GEM is partnering with Burroughs-Molette Elementary School in Brunswick by working through the Communities in Schools office that has been established at the school.  BMES is a special place that faces a lot of challenges, from the poverty of its student body to the dilapidated school building, to its lack of resources for anything but the most basic services and facets of education.

Here are some of the projects we are undertaking in the near future that we hope you can be a part of:

* After School Tutoring at BMES

* Student Mentoring at BMES

* Field Day Volunteers at BMES

* Food Donation unloading for Backpack Buddies

* Scouting at BMES
For ALL BMES opportunities, please contact:
Aleacia Floy: [email protected]
Becky Mathews: [email protected]

* GEM's Food Pantry Summer Program
Contact The Rev. Becky Rowell: [email protected]

* GEM Sponsored Laundry Love Nights
Contact The Rev. June Johnson: [email protected]

* Support for Street Beat's Graduating Seniors
Notes of support can be sent to the Parish Office.  Students names are:  Joseph Lang (attending Clayton or Valdosta), Shawn White (CCGA), Kaylah Reid (Middle Georgia), Herman Roberson (CCGA), Chatteona Brown (serving in the military), and Craig Campbell.  The college dorm room wish list is at Bed Bath and Beyond under "Street Beat Graduation."

Backpack Buddies will be packing bags for BMES on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at 10:00 am. Please join us!
