Rector's Ramblings

Once again the headlines of the day hit close to home for the events of Holy Week.  In the midst of this, the holiest of weeks for Christians, we are once again saddened by the news that terrorism has claimed the lives of dozens in Brussels while injuring scores more.  The mechanism of response is becoming almost thoughtless; we will use hashtags on Twitter to say we're in solidarity, and we will display the Belgian flag on Facebook.  We'll denounce the evils of terrorism and lament the fear that it so successfully wields.  No doubt we'll move on to another event soon, and Brussels will fade like Paris and other attacks largely have.

In this Holy Week series of remembrances from Jesus' last days on this side of death we are reminded that terror and oppression are the tools of the Roman Empire to keep people in line and manage the affairs of the populace.  If you can keep people afraid you can much more easily manage them and keep them from focusing on things you may not want them to notice.  Even modern politics knows how valuable the currency of fear is.  We need new bogeymen every so often when the old ones become more familiar and less scary.

Youth News

Jr. EYC has some great events planned for March, April and May. On Sunday, March 13 we said goodbye to winter with an exciting ice skating outing in Jacksonville. In April Jr. EYC will meet at Neptune Park to play and have dinner, and then go to Rebounderz in Jacksonville in May. The tentative dates for these activities are Friday, April 15 and Saturday, May 14. All 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are welcome! To get your child signed up or for more information, please contact Kim Chitty. 912-222-8126 or [email protected] or Brad Hamil at 912-223-7276 / [email protected].

On Sunday, March 13, the EYC sponsored Souper Sunday. Many thanks to all who participated in this event and helped the youth raise $400 for mission and outreach!

Men's Bible Study
The Men's Bible Study meets at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesdays. Fr. Tom is leading the study of the Rule of St. Benedict using a book written by Joan Chittister. It has daily readings that are short in nature. Each one contains a small piece of Benedict's rule followed by some commentary. Contact: Te Turner  695-4131 or the church office.
Centering Prayer Group
A Centering Prayer group, led by The Rev. Nancy Acree, meets each Wednesday at 11:00 in the parish hall library.  Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer in which we experience God's presence within us  This method of silent prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship.  It is not meant to replace other ways of prayer but is meant to foster a personal relationship and move beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him.  All are welcome and no previous experience is necessary.  Come and try it out.
Adult Formation
Book Study with Fr. Rian
Fr. Rian will lead an afternoon book study group on Marcus Borg's The Heart of Christianity on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. in the parish hall. The group will explore Borg's ideas about what lies at the center of our faith.

EC 101
Beginning March 30, Episcopal Church 101 will meet on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 in the parish hall. It is a six-week study for anyone wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church either in preparation for being confirmed, received or reaffirmed (wonder what the difference is among those?) or simply to answer those "why do we" questions. If you are interested in joining this group or would like to know more, please contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected] or call the church office at 638-8683.

Welcome to the Episcopal Church, will be available in the church office later this week.  Those wishing to help offset the $13 cost of the book are welcome to do so.

Fellowship

Coffee Hour Hosts NeededCHHN
Coffee Hour is a time of fellowship after the 9:15 a.m. service has ended. It provides a welcoming place, to talk to the clergy, to meet new people, and to relax with friends. Our coffee hour hosts provide light refreshments, coffee, tea, and usually a cold drink. We try to include a healthy alternative alongside our sweet treats so that parishioners with special diets can participate.

Coffee hour teams arrive before each service to start coffee and put together their food items, and then leave the service right after Communion to prepare to serve the refreshments. They clean up afterward. It's fun and easy to do and is a perfect way to meet new people and enjoy fellowship with the Christ Church family.  If you would like to sign up to become a Coffee Hour Host, please let Glenn know. You can either call him at the Parish Office (912-638-8683), or email him at [email protected]
Outreach

St. Athanasius Food Bank
Don't forget to bring a non-perishable food for the St. Athanasius Food Bank. There is a shopping cart at the entrance of the parish hall just for that purpose. At St. Ignatius, please leave donations on the front pew. At Christ Church, you may leave them in the narthex.

Tour of Homes - Grant Application Deadline

The ECW works diligently throughout the year on its two fundraising projects, the Tour of Homes and cookbook sales.  Last year a record total of $70,000 was distributed in grants to local charities; however, this year grant applications have been slow to arrive.  If you are involved in an organization which customarily applies for an ECW grant, please remind its officers that the deadline for receipt of applications is March 31st. Grant applications can be found on the homepage of the CCF ECW website.

Fairy Godmother Project

Please help the young women at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia feel like princesses at the prom this year and in the years to come! The Fairy Godmother Project is collecting new and gently used prom style dresses at the following locations: 729 Ocean Blvd., St. Simons; 3836 Johnson Street, Brunswick; and 4226 Coral Park Drive, Brunswick. All donations are tax deductible and monetary donations are also welcome. For more information, contact Megan at [email protected] or at [email protected]

Christ Church Relay for Life Team
Christ Church will be participating as a team for the first time in Relay For Life. The event is to be held on Friday, April 29th from 6:00 pm to 12:00 pm midnight and is a lot of fun. Relay For Life is an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society. How can you help our team?

1. Make a donation.
2. Walk with our team and ask family and friends to help sponsor you. We have a letter you can send with return envelope.
3. Purchase a tee shirt - $10 Make checks payable to Christ Church Frederica and note t-shirt number and sizes in the memo line.

4. Purchase luminaries in Honor or Memory of a friend or family member.
5. Eat out for a cause. Chick-Fil-A is having a spirit night on April 14th from 5 - 8pm for Christ Church. Take your special flyer (we will hand out) with you when you order dinner and 25% of the profits we generate will go to our walkathon.
6. If you are a survivor, sign up to walk the first lap of the event, the Survivor's lap. You are the reason for the event.

Relay for Life is not an athletic event like the Bridge Run, but a fun community event with a county fair like atmosphere and supports a marvelous cause. We will have a table set up between services on Sunday where you can sign up or make contributions. For additional questions or information, please contact Sally Essig, 638-0971 or [email protected].
