Rector's
Ramblings

Today I am literally going to ramble. There are a number of things for me to touch on briefly, so hang in there. First of all, after a fantastic homecoming weekend and Festival, I need to say, God is good! Thank you to all of you who made this a fabulous weekend, especially those of you who worked so hard at the first Fall Flower and Music Festival. We've already been asked by many people when we are going to do it again, and as of right now we don't know. I can tell you it won't be an annual event, but we will certainly try to do it again. As of now, it seems that the Festival reached nearly 900 people (not including volunteers and musicians, and not including our Saturday and Sunday morning attendance) and generated approximately $10,000 dollars in profits. By any measure, that makes this inaugural event a great success that we can all be proud of.

Many of you also saw that Becky was back with us for one of our Sunday liturgies this week. She is beginning to slowly make her way back into life on the staff, and she will be taking her time. One word of encouragement for the congregation though: Becky knows how sorry we all are for her loss, and she knows we loved Charles too. She also doesn't want or need us to tell her how sorry we are or tell her of our favorite memory of Charles every time we see her. Those sorts of comments are hard to receive by the dozens when one is trying to keep one's composure in a public setting. I would ask that if you feel a need to convey those sentiments that you do it in a note card which Becky can read in private when she's ready. She knows we love and support her, and the best way we can help her do that now is to help her find a new normal. As many surviving spouses will tell you, they carry their grief with them for a long time, and learning to live with it is hard. If it is always brought to the surface, it makes it that much harder. What Becky would appreciate is knowing how happy we are that she is a part of our community and how pleased we are that she is making her way back. She needs to be back for her own spiritual and emotional health and nourishment, and I know we can help her find it.

Worship

X Church
Have you attended X Church? It is contemplative eucharistic worship which has become a regular part of our liturgical offerings. It is held at Christ Church each Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and includes the use of prayers and litanies from around the Anglican Communion. This is a time of quiet worship and reflection with candles, chanting, incense and silence. Incense is not used on the first Wednesday of the month. It is open to all people, and is an attempt to offer a worship experience unlike any other on the island.
Memorial Poinsettias
If you wish to remember a loved one at Christmas with a memorial poinsettia, you can send the name(s) along with a check for $25 for each plant to Ethel Horton, 402 Palm Court, S.S.I. Checks should be made payable to "Christ Church Altar Guild" and received no later than December 16. If you have any questions, please call Ethel Horton at 634-8327. Why not do it this week and you can tick off one item on your Christmas to-do list!

Living Well Through Advent 2015: Practicing Patience With All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind

Designed for use as an individual reflection or for group study, Practicing Patience With All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind provides a frame for those seeking a deeper experience of the Advent season, one that will help prepare us for the true meaning of Christmas. Each Sunday in this 48-page guide offers a reflection written by a guest writer; and every other day of the week begins with a scripture or quote, followed by a reflection, and then space to record any thoughts, feelings, or insights. The Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner-author and founder of Living Compass, a faith and wellness ministry initiative-has served his community for more than 30 years as an Episcopal priest, psychotherapist, retreat leader, and spiritual director. In Living Well Through Advent 2015, he is joined by guest writers The Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, The Rev. Nurya Love Parish, The Rev. Tom Purdy, and The Rt. Rev. G. Porter Taylor.

Because Fr. Purdy is one of the guest writers, we have been given copies of this study to distribute. He would like anyone who would like one to have one.  You need not pay for it, however, if you would like to make a contribution to the Rector's Discretionary Fund, those gifts will go towards helping the needy. We have enough that you may take multiple copies and give them to friends, neighbors, and family members.  Copies may be found in the office and in the church.

New Beginnings!!
New Beginnings will take place during the weekend of November 20-22, 2015, at Honey Creek. New Beginnings is a weekend retreat for teenagers in grades 7-9 led by a team of mostly teenagers, with a few adults, and two clergy spiritual directors. The weekend takes participants through a discovery about ourselves, our friends, our families, our faith, and how to live out our faith in our daily lives.

How might this discovery happen?
Through making new friends and sharing with old ones, through singing, skits, talks given by teens, videos, games, worship, and conversation with each other! You are encouraged to bring friends from your church and an adult who will stay through the weekend. Everyone will take an active part in the program. You can go to New Beginnings as many times as you'd like...as long as you're in grades 7-9. We know once you go, you will want to go back. There is even an opportunity to serve on the team...you'll hear more about that at the
Adult Formation - Wednesday Evening Class
Faithful Travelers, Wednesday Series. 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Walk through Biblical and contemporary stories that inform and inspire our relationship with God and one another. Seasoned with Theology 101, explore the notion that personal is a verb, not a noun; a relationship not a premise. In the midst of the series, we will shift from theology (what we believe) to ethics (how we live out our belief). Applying principles of ethical analysis, we will examine a number of case studies in the last two sessions.
The class will meet each Wednesday, beginning October 21st and ending November 18th, in the Son Porch at 5:30 p.m.

"God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." Philippians 2:12

There is only one ultimate duty: "Thou shall love your neighbor as yourself." How to do this is the ethical question and our moral duty. William Temple

Wednesday, October 21: "THE INESCAPABLE PRESENCE"
Wednesday, October 28, "THE SPIRIT OF COMPASSION"
Wednesday, November 4: "GRANT US WISDOM, GRANT US COURAGE"
Wednesday, November 11: "SEEING THE HIGHER GROUND"
Wednesday, November 18: "A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT.
Parenting Book Study

Adult Bible Class
November 1 - new Adult Class Study - Sunday mornings 10:30 - 11:15 am

Everyone is welcome

"If you've been a churchgoer for more than just a few Sundays, walking into church probably doesn't seem like it deserves its own 'how to' manual.  Right?  In fact, it most likely seems like a pretty straightforward and trivial weekly activity.

"But things are rarely as simple as they seem, and how you walk into church reveals a great deal about what you think church is, what it's for, and what you think you're doing there."

Join us on Sunday mornings in November as we study Tony Payne's book How To Walk Into Church where we'll think about the what, how and why we walk into church and the difference it makes in our lives.
We'll take a break from the study for a special Advent Study (November 29-December 20) - then, in January, we'll finish the study by thinking about what we do before and after we walk into church and how to walk out of church.

It all promises to stimulate some excellent discussion and is guaranteed to make us think about this 'thing' we call church.

The leader for the Class is the Rev. Dr. Bob Brown and the style of teaching is lecture and class participation with great fellowship and thought provoking discussions.  Books will be available at the Class and through the church office.
Adult Bible Class Advent Study
November 29 - December 20, 2015

This Advent, we will join with Episcopalians across the Diocese in studying Rowan William's Being Christian. This work, written by former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams is based on talks given at Canterbury Cathedral as part of a series of open lectures in 2013.

"While the work is brief, the view Williams' offers is deeply Anglican, immanently accessible, and bracingly profound."

"In this simple, beautifully written book Rowan Williams explores four essential components of the Christian life: baptism, Bible, Eucharist, and prayer. Despite huge differences in Christian thinking and practice both today and in past centuries, he says, these four basic elements have remained constant and indispensable for the majority of those who call themselves Christians."

Everyone is welcome.  The Adult Classroom is just outside the Choir Room.  The Rev. Dr. Bob Brown is the Class Leader and will facilitate the discussions.
You are encouraged to be a part of the Class to share your thoughts face to face each week in Advent, but you can also participate with the rest of the Diocese online. First, each week in Advent read the selected portion of the 96-page book or listen to the corresponding part of the 2 hour and 25 minute audio version. Then each Sunday in Advent, the Diocesan office  will add a reflection on the section for the week to the website 1book1diocese.georgiaepiscopal.org where you can also take part by adding your comments on that reflection as well as your thoughts on the questions Williams poses at the end of the chapter. Selections to read will be shared at the 1Book1Diocese website, and in "From the Field", and at the diocesan Facebook page.

Books will be available through the Church office.

Parenting Group
The parenting reading group meets each Sunday in the vestry room between the 9:15 and 11:15 services while children are in Sunday School. They are discussing The Busy Family's Guide to Spirituality: Practical Lessons for Modern Living from the Monastic Tradition. Books are available for $18 and may be purchased at the class. Please call the church  office (912.638.8683) to sign up for the group.
