Rector's Ramblings

Boy, was the Pope's visit exciting!  Or so we surmise from the media coverage.  Considering how many of us aren't Roman Catholic in this country, it is a telling cultural phenomenon to experience the reaction to the Vicar of Christ on these shores.  For those who want to suggest that Christianity has no voice or influence in our country anymore, spend some time contemplating that the Pope was invited to address a joint session of Congress.  That is not afforded to just anyone.  Not only did our leaders listen to his words, millions in our nation watched it live.  I think its safe to say that we cannot call the Pope, or the faith he represents irrelevant.

The other part of the phenomenon that was interesting/entertaining/disheartening to witness was how we fought over the Pope's message.  We got an unexpected encore this week with the flap over one of the Pope's secret meetings.  We really did jockey for the chance to get our ideological selfie taken with the religious rock star of the news cycle.  I saw a political cartoon from artist Tim Hartman last week that I found insightful.  In it you see the Pope smiling.  On one side of him is a donkey saying, "He's with me on climate change!"  On the other side you see an elephant saying, "No!  He's with me on Life!!"  Then you see Jesus standing off to the side saying, "Excuse me, but I'm pretty sure he's with me."  There were many who tried to celebrate the Pope where he agreed with them, or distance themselves where they differed.  It makes for pretty good sport.

Worship

X Church Begins October 7th
X Church begins at 7:00 p.m. on October 7th in Christ Church. X Church is contemplative eucharistic worship which has become a regular part of our liturgical offerings at Christ Church.  X Church is a combination of ancient practices from the Anglican tradition, assembled for modern people.  It blends practices that are thousands of years old with a mix of liturgical language.  X Church includes the use of prayers and litanies from around the Anglican Communion.  This is not liturgy in a hurry.  This is a time of quiet worship and reflection, with many candles, incense, chanting, and silence.  X Church is a relaxed service in which the clergy will not vest in traditional vestments.  It is open to all people, and is an attempt to offer a worship experience unlike any other on the Island.

Why contemplative worship?  Our days are busy and full of stress, and X Church seeks to become a place of rest and refreshment.  In tending towards mediative practices our hearts can be opened to receive the peace of God which passes all understanding.  All of our senses are engaged in X Church to help us enter into relationship with the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sustainer. Childcare will be provided.

Outreach

The Angel Guild
We are looking to reinvigorate the Angel Guild - can you help?  The Angel Guild provides meals to parish members and families facing a pastoral challenge or need.  The need may be an illness, a death in the family, or even for happy events like the birth of a child.  Providing meals to families and individuals not only nourishes them physically, but also emotionally, and spiritually.  This is a wonderful way to show God's love to those around us.  By signing up you are agreeing to be put on a distribution list for contact when a need arises.  Once a need is known the coordinator will ask for volunteers to provide a meal according to the need.  If you are interested in becoming part of the Angel Guild, please contact the church office at 638-8683 or [email protected].

Pastoral Concerns

Pastoral Care by our Clergy

The care of our parishioners at Christ Church is shared by our clergy and other specially trained laypersons in our parish. Our priests are especially available to visit you in the hospital, to pray with you, to offer Sacraments and the rites of the Church, and to lend a listening ear and pastoral presence at times of acute crisis.

Notifying Clergy of Needs & EmergenciesPastoralCare

The best way to ensure our clergy team is aware of your pastoral need or emergency is to call one of our priests via the church office, or by cell phone if after hours. Please do not rely on email or social media to communicate emergency information, and remember, privacy policies now prohibit medical facilities from contacting churches on your behalf. We do not publish clergy cell numbers on the website, but they are available upon request from the church office and are printed in the church directory. Or, you may call the pastoral care line at 912-230-7362 to reach the priest on call.
