Rector's Ramblings

As I write this I am getting sick for the first time this year. Donna and I can't remember that I've had an illness since last fall. I know I didn't get sick at Christmas or Easter, and I'm positive I haven't been sick since Easter. I know this because in previous years, I am always sick for one or the other or both. There may have been a 24-hour cold in Lent this year, but nothing that made an impression. This is a huge departure for me, as I am used to getting sinus infections several times a year. But, I've worked hard to be and stay healthier, and I think it has worked. At least until now.

I've tried to eat (a little) better. I exercise regularly. I wash my hands frequently, especially after the greeting line on Sunday (no offense). And, I take vitamins every day, including a large dose of Vitamin C. I actually think the latter might be the key. Those get-better-faster elixirs are often packed with Vitamin C, and I take the equivalent of one of those every day with my vitamins. I suspect this cold, or whatever it is, is a result of the girls going back to school. Kids are little germ factories and no doubt one of them has a Typhoid Tom in their class who was more than happy to share his highlighter and his germs. Thanks Tom.

Update on Charles Lamkin and The Rev. Becky Rowell
Charles entered Hospice care this week.  As many of you know from experience, Hospice care does not necessarily mean a person is about to die, but it does mean that there won't be any further other treatment options pursued.  The new chemo Charles had recently begun proved to be a bit too much for him to handle, and they have decided not to continue. This new phase of treatment will allow Charles and Becky to get the help they need and to benefit from a unified treatment plan, instead of one made up of many doctors who don't always communicate well with one another.

Many of you have asked what you can do to help Charles and Becky.  The only thing they have indicated they could use as of now is a list of people that they might call upon to stay with Charles, as needed, when Becky must go out for one reason or another.  If you are willing to add your name to that list, please call the office and let us know.  We will pass this list along to Charles and Becky.

Please do keep them in your prayers, as well as all those in our community who struggle with illness.

Worship

Kidurgy
Kidurgy is Back!  At the 9:15 service, our children's crucifer will lead children through grade 5 over to the Parish Hall for Kidurgy, our children's liturgy.  Children and adult shepherds will process out during the opening hymn and return during the peace so that families can receive communion together.  We have a new children's chapel designed especially for our children.  Don't miss the Return of Kidurgy on August 16!
Special Worship Service
On Sunday, August 30, we will celebrate The Rev. Anson Green Phelps Dodge, Jr. by celebrating communion from the 1892 Book of Common Prayer at all services, the official prayer book at the time of Anson's ministry.  We will also sing hymns from that period as well.  Anson died on August 20, 1898.

  • Junior Choristers ages 4-7 will rehearse on Tuesday from 5:00 to 5:45 in the choir room.
  • Senior Choristers ages 8 and older will rehearse on Wednesday from 5:00-5:45.  I am joining the Senior Choristers with the adult choir for the first hour of their rehearsal.  This choir is now the Christ Church Choir.

The Dream of God by Verna Dozier - Tuesdays 2:00-3:00
From the website for this gem of a little book, "Again and again the Christian church has fallen away from the dream God has for it, a dream in which we are called to follow Jesus and not merely to worship him. Through adept storytelling and Bible study, Dozier reawakens our sense of calling and our desire for truth."  Verna Dozier was a lay woman, who through her powerful, compelling writing style, worked to revitalize the ministry of the laity.  She calls on all baptized Christians to do the bidding of Jesus Christ as we spread the kingdom of God.

The study group will begin on Tuesday afternoon, August 25th, from 2:00-3:00 pm in the Parish Hall.  The text is available in the church office.  Donations to cover the $14 cost will be appreciated.

Episcopal Church 101 (EC 101) for Adults - Wednesdays 5:30-6:30
EC 101 is a six-week study for anyone wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church, either in preparation for being confirmed, received or reaffirmed (wonder what the difference is among these?) or simply to answer those "why do we" questions.  In past sessions we've explored questions like what is holy water, why do people serving at the altar wear vestments and why do the altar hangings change colors sometimes?  We will answer these and other questions participants ask as we discuss the church's history, beliefs, and practices during our six weeks together. Adults who have completed this training may be confirmed, received or can reaffirm their baptismal vows in May when the Bishop makes his annual visitation.  We will use Welcome to the Episcopal Church by Christopher Webber. The text is available in the church office.  Donations to cover the $13 cost are appreciated.

EC 101 will meet on Wednesday evenings beginning August 26 from 5:30 to 6:30 in the Parish Hall.  Childcare will be provided. If you are interested in joining this group or would like to know more, please contact Fr. Tom at
[email protected] or call the church office at 638-8683.

Centering Prayer - Tuesdays at 4:00
Rev. Nancy Acree will lead a centering prayer group at St. Ignatius beginning September 15th at 4:00 p.m., running for six weeks.  Periods of silence and directed meditation lead participants to be open to hear the voice of God among the many voices in life.

Ongoing

Sunday School - 10:30-11:15
This Fall, the Adult Class will be studying the book, The Top Ten List for Christians: Priorities for Faithful Living.  David Letterman made the Top Ten list popular, but the truth is that Top Ten lists have been around for a long, long time.  The author, James W. Moore, says that the first and best Top Ten list is called the Ten Commandments and is just as relevant today as it was in ancient times.

This book offers a "contemporary" Top Ten list of important things for Christians to remember as we make our way through life's journey.  Acknowledging that we all need guideposts to help us along the way, Moore offers ten witty and wise reminders of the real priorities in life - God's priorities for faithful living.

Chapter titles include:  "Love is the Greatest!,"  "God is Smarter than You Are,"  "Every Now and Then We all Hear a Rooster Crow,"  and "You Do Better When You Try" and others.  The Class is a discussion format led by The Rev. Dr. Bob Brown and all adults are invited to participate.

You may purchase the book for $13 in the class, or from the church office.

Tour of Homes Planning MeetingECW
Planning for the 2016 63rd Annual Tour of Homes is already underway! Please join this year's tour chairs for a planning meeting on Friday August 28 at 10 am at Christ Church Parish Hall (refreshments will be provided). Please RSVP to [email protected] or 912-222-8921.
The Angel Guild
We are looking to reinvigorate the Angel Guild - can you help?  The Angel Guild provides meals to parish members and families facing a pastoral challenge or need.  The need may be an illness, a death in the family, or even for happy events like the birth of a child.  Providing meals to families and individuals not only nourishes them physically, but also emotionally, and spiritually.  This is a wonderful way to show God's love to those around us.  By signing up you are agreeing to be put on a distribution list for contact when a need arises.  Once a need is known the coordinator will ask for volunteers to provide a meal according to the need.  If you are interested in becoming part of the Angel Guild, please contact the church office at 638-8683 or [email protected].
St. Athanasius Food Bank
You may donate canned and packaged foods all month for the St. Athanasius Food Bank. There is a shopping cart at the entrance of the Parish Hall just for that purpose. At St. Ignatius, please leave donations on the front pew.
Eucharistic Visitors
Because we are a faith community, we want to make sure all the members of the parish are fed from the Lord's Table.  Eucharistic Visitors are specially trained lay people who take communion to parishioners who are unable to attend church due to accident or illness.  Sent out with consecrated bread and wine, Eucharistic Visitors share with those who cannot join the community for worship.  If you become sick or have an injury that prevents you from attending church, please let the church office know and we will be glad to bring communion to you.
Knitting Group
Beginning September 14, knitters and crocheters will gather once a month in the Parish Hall for a prayer shawl ministry. Bring your lunch and the prayer shawl you are working on. The group will be glad to teach you to knit or crochet. Prayer shawls are blessed and given to parishioners experiencing challenges as a symbol of the church's love and concern for them. Foyer Groups are Forming.
Foyer Groups are groups of six or so Christ Church members who gather monthly in each others homes to share a meal. This is an opportunity to meet parishioners you have not had a chance to get to know. Members take turns hosting the potluck dinner in their homes. The host furnishes the main dish and others bring the rest of the meal. A small living space, food or pet allergies or lack of culinary skills are not deterrents to participating. We can accommodate all of these restrictions and more. Please email Glenn ([email protected] ), or call the church office by September 18 if you would like to participate and we will forward more detailed information.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Beginning September 14, knitters and crocheters will gather once a month on the second Monday in the Parish Hall for a prayer shawl ministry. Bring your lunch and the prayer shawl you are working on. The group will be glad to teach you to knit or crochet. Prayer shawls are blessed and given to parishioners experiencing challenges as a symbol of the church's love and concern for them.  Contact: Mtr. Becky at [email protected].

Pastoral Concerns

Pastoral Care by our Clergy

The care of our parishioners at Christ Church is shared by our clergy and other specially trained laypersons in our parish. Our priests are especially available to visit you in the hospital, to pray with you, to offer Sacraments and the rites of the Church, and to lend a listening ear and pastoral presence at times of acute crisis.

Notifying Clergy of Needs & EmergenciesPastoralCare

The best way to ensure our clergy team is aware of your pastoral need or emergency is to call one of our priests via the church office, or by cell phone if after hours. Please do not rely on email or social media to communicate emergency information, and remember, privacy policies now prohibit medical facilities from contacting churches on your behalf. We do not publish clergy cell numbers on the website, but they are available upon request from the church office and are printed in the church directory. Or, you may call the pastoral care line at 912-230-7362 to reach the priest on call.
