Rector's Ramblings

RR

I've started to wonder if

I am ever going to get to that point where I'm done waiting, or preparing, or planning for that next thing. It occurs to me that the saying made famous by John Lennon can be true: "Life is what happens when you're making other plans." Most of us are living from project to project, from event to event - not unlike the universally accepted dangerous practice of living paycheck to paycheck. We often have so many things going at one time that we're often caught up in preparations for that next event, or looking forward to that next "whatever it is". I've even heard people express their desire to get one thing over with so they can get on to the next one. (I may have in fact said something like that along the way too!)

Christmas has become the mother all preparatory seasons, and even outpaces the Christian preparations during the season of Lent for many of us. Before the secular grip on Christmas took hold, my guess is that the latter was the principle season of any real preparation for most Christians. We have been trained and seduced by the TV-movie and glossy magazine cover images of what Christmas can be and we labor long and hard to bring it to reality. The danger in doing so is that the beauty, peace and wonder of the season of Advent can get lost. In essence, we can be so busy 'making other plans' for the coming holiday that we don't stop to enjoy the life between now and then.

Worship

Advent Wreath ExtravaganzaAWE
Join us THIS Sunday, November 30th for our Advent Wreath Extravaganza! We'll start at 5:00 p.m. in the Parish House, with a potluck dinner and we will make our own Advent wreaths. Christ Church will provide the candles and wreath forms. Families provide their own greenery, and should bring gloves and clippers if you have them.

At 5:30 p.m., we will create our Living Advent Wreath, using our bodies and voices to learn about the meaning of the Advent wreath as we create a large one together. (We will even get to sneak in a couple Christmas carols...). Following this short presentation, we will have time to finish up our personal Advent wreaths.

Advent Choral Evensong

At 7:00 p.m., everyone is invited to attend a special

Advent Evensong in the church. "Evensong ... is a very tiny fragment of something else: it is a fragment of the worship which is offered to God by Christian people every hour in every part of the world. When you come to Evensong here it is as if you were dropping in on a conversation already in progress - a conversation between God and people which began long before you were born and will go on long after you are dead."

Evensong offers to us the opportunity to gather and spend time in prayer while listening and participating in music that is especially selected to bring us into deeper understanding of the mysteries of our faith. (http://stpaulsivy.org/music/choral-evensong-october-24/)

We hope you will be able to join us for this special  evening of fun, learning, and fellowship!
Blue Christmas at St Ignatius
All are invited to our Blue Christmas service, to take place on Sunday, December 14th, 6:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius'. This service is designed especially for those who struggle with grief, sadness, or isolation during the Advent season. This service, which contains a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, acknowledges the difficulties many of us face this time of year and provides a safe space for those for whom this is not a happy time. For more information, or to assist with the service in some way, please email Rev. Leigh.
Lessons and Carols

Christ Church will offer Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at both the 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services. The 9:15 a.m. service will be more family friendly, with some of the scripture readings offered as children's Bible stories. The 11:15 a.m. service will be a more traditional Lessons and Carols service.

Lessons and Carols began as a Christmas Eve experience for the community of King's College, Cambridge, England, in the final year of the First World War. Its instant popularity with a war-sick populace signaled widespread thirst for deeper, closer engagement with the message of the Savior's birth.

Adopted after World War II by various Episcopal churches in the United States, Lessons and Carols has been performed at Church of the Incarnation for nearly seven decades as part of the church season of Advent, during which Christians prepare and equip themselves spiritually for the joyous coming of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (http://incarnation.org/lessonsandcarols/)

Please join us for this time of preparation. For more information about this service, please email Kathleen Turner.

Christmas at Sea

Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas (Thanksgiving through Orthodox Christmas on Jan. 7th) the International Seafarers' Center (ISC) spreads the love of Christ through the Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th. ISC hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present. Often this is the only gift they receive as they travel the seas transporting 95% of the goods that we use every day.

How can we at Christ Church help? Collect 12-15 items from the list below, from as many of the different categories as possible, place them in a shoebox, wrap it in Christmas paper, and bring it to Christ Church.  Gifts will be accepted now through January 6.  If you need more information, call Dcn. Becky.
