Rector's Ramblings

RR

.Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, or so they say. I sincerely like the Bishop of North Carolina, Michael Curry, whom I quoted in Sunday's sermon. When working on sermons my process is to familiarize myself with the readings and then begin reading commentaries and researching context for the sermon. Sometimes I get an idea - a picture in my head, or a story that I like, or sometimes even the final sentence. Once I have it, I am off and running. Sometimes the process is very linear, and sometimes it's all over the place.

Somewhere in my All Saints sermon preparation

I found a reference to Jesus thinking differently in the Sermon on the Mount and made a leap to the Think Different campaign they used; I was off and running. As I wrote about saints being a different sort of person I remembered Bishop Curry's words at General Convention and the book he wrote to build upon the success of that sermon - basically calling for more crazy, different Christians in the world.

Advent Wreath Extravaganza
Join us on Sunday, November 30th for our Advent Wreath Extravaganza! We'll start at 5:00 p.m. in the Parish House, where we will make our own Advent wreaths. Christ Church will provide the candles and wreath forms. Families provide their own greenery, and should bring gloves and clippers if you have them. At 5:30 p.m., we will create our Living Advent Wreath, using our bodies and voices to learn about the meaning of the Advent wreath as we create a large one together. (We will even get to sneak in a couple Christmas carols...). Following this short presentation, we will have time to finish up our personal Advent wreaths. At 6:30 p.m., everyone is invited to attend a special Advent Evensong in the church. We hope you will be able to join us for this special evening of fun, learning, and fellowship!
Blue Christmas at St Ignatius
All are invited to our Blue Christmas service, to take place on Sunday, December 14th, 6:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius'. This service is designed especially for those who struggle with grief, sadness, or isolation during the Advent season. This service, which contains a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, acknowledges the difficulties many of us face this time of year and provides a safe space for those for whom this is not a happy time. For more information, or to assist with the service in some way, please email Rev. Leigh.

Youth Ministry

Many thanks to all who made our youth lock-in a big success. It was a great opportunity to team up with Fr. Alan Akridge of St. Mark's for a joint event.  Lots of fun was had, and there seemed to be a good sense of community with the CCF and St. Mark's students. I especially want to thank the following parent and adult volunteers: Kim Chitty, Marion Gash, Ed Turner and Lynne Turner. You guys really stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park!
