I recently sat with a very talented procurement professional. The problem is, he did not know it. At least until he discovered
just how valuable he was! He had saved the company close to $200,000 by innovating a procedure that was allowing money to walk out the door on a daily basis. He thought it was just part of his job.
At the end of our session, a smile slowly crept across his face. He reminded me of the Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland fame, as if to say, " I understand now!"
What he "understood" is it is not enough to be "good" at what you do for a living and expect to be rewarded. As a matter of fact, it is not enough to be "great" at what you do for a living and expect to be rewarded...
Why?
Because navigating your career takes a strategy that showcases your unique accomplishments.
I know this can be a tough one to accept, but your achievements are not the first thing on your bosses mind or your co-workers radar. They can not testify for your value unless they know the value you bring!
Here are three things you NEED TO BE DOING EVERY WEEK
to accelerate yourself into the spot light:
- Create a running list of achievement statements outlining anything you consider an accomplishment
- Keep that list in a special "about me" file somewhere where you can easily get to it
- Take the initiative to "educate" your boss and other key co-workers about your contributions when you can and when it is appropriate
Don't be shy- Don't hesitate to take action. Why?
Because people do not know what you don't tell them!
I have worked with so many frustrated mid and upper level professionals who left their career in the hands of "higher ups" only to be devastated when their performance evaluations suffered, they were RIFFED because co-workers could not vouch for their value, or worst of all, they could not articulate their value.
