How to Create a Lion Trim on a Pet Pomeranian
Judy Hudson, NCMG

Judy Hudson is a leading educator in the world of professional pet grooming. She travels worldwide providing seminars and demonstrations about grooming. When she's not jet-setting, she grooms everyday pets just like you. Her mobile grooming business is just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. As Judy says with all her pet dogs, "Cute goes a long way in the pet grooming world!"

Lion trims are a great alternative to totally shaving the coat off a full-coated pet. It offers a stylish trim to many breeds of dogs and cats. Pomeranians are super candidates for this haircut.

In this lesson, Judy set the trim on a Pomeranian she has never met before. She demonstrates how to do this trim with a #5F blade. Once the pattern is set, she shows you how to tidy up the lines and do the finishing touches.

When this little pup is done, she's adorable. Her owners were thrilled with this low maintenance hairstyle. We bet you have clients in your database that would love this trim too!

Approximate total running time:  31 minutes

In this video you will learn:
  • how to use a blade for the smoothest finish.
  • where to set the line for the mane.
  • ways to tidy up the ruff.
  • how to detail the ears.
  • how to trim the tail.

Grooming the Toy Poodle in a Sporting Dog Trim

The breed standard for all three sizes of Poodles is the same, but grooming them is a totally different story. Grooming a Toy Poodle requires a whole different skill set.

Michell has a great analogy of the difference. She says, "When you groom a Standard Poodle, it's like painting a picture - a mural - a nice big picture. When you groom a Toy Poodle, everything is very precise. It's like building a ship in a bottle."

In this lesson, Michell shows you how to quickly set in the pattern using a variety of guard combs. Not only does this technique enhance speed, but it also builds consistency with your trim style. Once the trim is blocked in with clippers, she changes to straight and curved shears to get the precision she is looking for when styling this dog.
