Grooming a Problem Pet
with Judy Hudson, NCMG

We all have that client that we dread. You see the client's name on your appointment book and your blood pressure immediately rises. The pet is uncooperative. It bites. These dogs would rather be anywhere but on your grooming table - and sometimes, so would you! They make an otherwise pleasant grooming day come to a screeching halt.

This is our most requested topic at Learn2GroomDogs. How do you handle the aggressive dog - and how do you do it safely? Watch award-winning pet groomer, Judy Hudson take on this challenge.

This particular dog had been through multiple groomers. He'd been sent home un-groomed multiple times. One groomer did attempt grooming him, but the dog suffered from post traumatic stress and cost the owners over $300 in vet bills.

At the time this lesson was filmed, Judy had groomed this dog only four or five times. This certainly is not a lesson about making the dog beautiful. It's about making the dog clean and comfortable while winning its trust - slowly.

Judy shows you the techniques that she has been using to get this dog groomed. Her focus is on effective and safe handling methods for both herself and the dog. As Judy says, "Rome was not built in a day - and this dog didn't get this way overnight." You will not rehab a challenging pet's attitudes with just one grooming.

You will need to go slow and not fight with the pet. Your goal is to set limits and boundaries while winning the dog's cooperation and trust. In this lesson, Judy gives you plenty of ideas on how to do just that. And if you stay with a lesson to the very end, you'll see exactly what Judy is talking about.

Approximate total running time:  37 minutes

In this video you will learn:
  • how to start working with a problem pet to win trust and cooperation.
  • why it's important to go slow.
  • ways to stay out of the "bite zone."
  • how to redirect their attention when they start to go off.
  • ideas on ways to get the job done safely when the pet has other ideas.
