How to Prepare a Shetland Sheepdog For the Conformation Show Ring
with Michell Evans - ICMG, NCMG

There is a big difference between show grooming and pet grooming. In this lesson, award-winning stylist, Michell Evans, gives you a wealth of information on show grooming.

Earlier this year Michell groomed the pet Sheltie for our L2GD members. In this lesson, she shows you how to prepare a Shetland Sheepdog for the confirmation ring. As Michell says, "This breed is really dolled up." There are lots of different products used to get a very fancy look for the show ring. She talks about the variety of products typically used to get a dog

ring ready.

Michell discussed how to apply them and why they are important. She also shows you which tools work the best to get the correct look in a Shetland Sheepdog.

There are many great take away tips from this lesson regardless of whether you're working on a show dog or not. Many of the techniques Michell talks about can easily cross-over into other breeds with similar coat types. We have broken this lesson into three segments.

Grooming Speed Trick = Wrap-A-Pet

This is the best speed trick around for a professional grooming salon. Wrap-a dog. Women have been doing it for years.

If you're gal and have had long hair at any point in your life, you know what I'm talking about.

You shower. You wash your hair. You step out of the shower and towel off. But before you do anything else from that point forward, you flip your head over and wrap your hair tightly in a towel. As you stand up, you flip the twisted towel toward your back. You are now sporting a turban style head wrap.

Grooming a Handstripped Mixed Breed to Retain Personality

Payton is a cute little terrier mix with a rough coat and loads of personality - the type of look you'd find on a dog destined for TV, including one blue eye and one brown eye! Clipping the coat off this dog would destroy her rough and tumble look. Check out how Marc LaFleur styles this dog use some basic tools to retain, the color of the coat, the harsh texture of the fur, and makes Payton easy to care for at home for her owner. This is a super easy style to do even if you have never tried your hand at handstripping before.

Approximate running time: 37 minutes.

Grooming TIP of the WEEK!
There are too many nice dogs in this world to
work on dogs in a professional setting that can be dangerous to themselves or to you.
