State Extends Grant Addressing Shortage of Child Psychiatrists


 
The University at Buffalo has received a one-year, $1.2 million grant extension for the country's second-largest pediatric mental health consultation program.

Since 2010, the New York State Office of Mental Health has funded the program, which aims to integrate mental and physical health care while addressing the state's critical shortage of pediatric psychiatrists.  Read more.

NY Expands Mental Health Safety Net for Released Inmates

 

State policymakers increasingly recognize that improving health outcomes is as much about addressing the social determinants of poor health as it is about providing high-quality medical care.

 

A number of states are testing payment models that reward good outcomes over greater volume and allow providers to invest in nonmedical interventions that improve health. Medicaid accountable care organizations (ACOs), or other ACO-like models, offer a prime opportunity to meld population health and payment and delivery system reforms

Risk Patterns Identified that Make People More Vulnerable to PTSD

 

Researchers have built a new computational tool that identifies 800 different ways people are at increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), permitting for the first time a personalized prediction guide.

 

This study shows that high-risk individuals who have experienced a traumatic event can be identified less than two weeks after they are first seen in the emergency department.

Domestic violence center zeroes in on teen relationships
Family Justice Center Development Director Tiffany Szymanek, left, and Executive Director Mary Travers Murphy are encouraged by a new program to help teens avoid abusive relationships.

As a leading local advocate for women in abusive relationships, Mary Travers Murphy has kept a daily schedule of visits to doctors' offices, community centers and businesses to talk about domestic violence.

 

Recently she added schools.

"Everybody's goal is to stop the scourge," Murphy said. "We need programs in schools to teach kids what a healthy relationship is. These kids think these controlling behaviors are normal."  Read more.   

The Conference of Local Mental Hygiene Directors advances public policies and awareness for people with mental illness, chemical dependency and developmental disabilities.  We are a statewide membership organization that consists of the Commissioner/ Director of each of the state's 57 county mental hygiene departments and the mental hygiene department of the City of New York.
