NYS Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction Releases Report

After conducting 18 public forums across the state, listening to 53 hours of testimony and speaking with more than 2,000 residents about the tragedy of the state's heroin and opioid epidemic, the Senate's bipartisan Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction has issued a special report, entitled: Solutions to New York's Heroin Epidemic.

The report makes legislative recommendations to help address the drug abuse, addiction and drug related crimes in New York that have been claiming lives and destroying families in communities throughout the state.  View the report here.

Treatment adherence is a problem among people with schizophrenia, who may not take medications because they don't perceive its need or benefit, don't like the side effects, or forget. To combat this issue, long-acting injectable medications are administered every 2-4 weeks. But are the new forms of these drugs better than the old ones? Read more.

Beacon Health Strategies and ValueOptions (both operating in NY) to Merge

The combined business will serve 43 million people across all 50 states and the United Kingdom

in a transaction designed to create a premier managed behavioral healthcare company in the United States.

"ValueOptions firmly believes combining with Beacon offers our clients, providers and members the industry's best behavioral healthcare management partner. Both entities know each other well. Both are financially strong. Both are recognized leaders. This move just makes sense from the perspective of providing a broader range of services to all of the different populations we now serve individually," said Heyward Donigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of ValueOptions. Upon completion of the transaction, Ms. Donigan will serve as an advisor to Mr. Murphy.

The merger is subject to regulatory review, which is expected to be completed in the fall of 2014. In the meantime, the two companies will continue to operate as independent organizations.  Read more.

NYT Op-Ed We can't predict which mentally ill people will become violent.

MASS killers like Elliot Rodger teach society all the wrong lessons about the connection between violence, mental illness and guns - and what we should do about it. One of the biggest misconceptions, pushed by our commentators and politicians, is that we can prevent these tragedies if we improve our mental health care system. It is a comforting notion, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Read more

The research project would place electronic devices in the brain in an attempt to combat post-traumatic stress, depression and other problems that have plagued many veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.   Read more.
Prescription Drugs More Deadly Than Car Accidents, Guns, and Suicide

America is in the throes of a prescription drug epidemic. More people die every day from that addiction than gunshot wounds, car accidents, or suicide-with 100 people losing their lives daily as a result of misusing medication.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse has some pretty shocking statistics detailing just how bad America's addiction has become. For example: the US, which holds 5 percent of the world's population, is responsible for 75 percent of global prescription drug use; 52 million people over the age of 12 have used this medication for purposes outside of what they are intended for.  Read more.
