New Initiative  May Transform Access to Claims Payment Data


Three of the country's largest insurance providers, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and Humana announced a partnership with the Health Care Cost Institute to create a payment database that will be available to the public for free.

MONROE - The New York State Justice Center has recommended the decertification and defunding of a Monroe agency that serves people with developmental disabilities following an investigation into charges of corporate mismanagement, financial self-dealing, Medicaid fraud and psychological abuse of clients.  Read more

Legal Opioid Use High in NY

 

Narcotics prescriptions are common for workers getting treatment for job-related injuries. But a study released by the Workers Compensation Research Institute raises concerns about possible overuse of such drugs.

The researchers looked at interstate variations and trends in the use of prescription painkillers. New Yorkers are getting higher doses by far than their counterparts in the 23 other states studied.

SAMHSA: Substance Abuse Patients Suffer from Privacy Rules

 

Existing federal privacy regulations are keeping healthcare organizations, including health-information exchange organizations, accountable care organizations and coordinated care organizations from relaying information about patients' substance-abuse disorders, according to HHS' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

This inability to share information is preventing some patients from fully benefiting from appropriate treatment models, the agency said. As a result, SAMSHA is now attempting to tweak regulations so those individuals can have full access to coordinated care, while still ensuring their personal information isn't at risk for exposure to unauthorized personnel, the agency said in a federal notice.  Read more.   

 

The Neighborhood Center in Utica will coordinate this state-funded team that is expected to be in place by June 1st. The team will probably consist of six full-time mental health therapists working in the region from 10 am to 6 pm daily.  

 

Officials say this team is there for intervention in hopes that earlier treatment will prevent hospitalization.  Bassett Medical Center notified the New York State Office of Mental Health earlier this year that due to severe provider shortages, it plans to discontinue its inpatient psychiatric services.  Read more.

 

A new interview simulation training program might help change that. A computer program that simulates a job interview can actually improve the way autistic adults present themselves, according to a new study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

 

The program, which was originally developed to help train FBI agents to interrogate suspects, allows users to practice job interviews and get feedback on their performances.  Read more.

 

Karen Kelley is one of about 10 million people who suffer from mental illness. The cost is staggering, and could never account for the emotional toll, since that could never be fully calculated.

 

More than half a million Americans with serious mental illness are falling through the cracks of a system in tatters, a USA TODAY special report shows.

 

The mentally ill who have nowhere to go and find little sympathy from those around them often land hard in emergency rooms, county jails and city streets. The lucky ones find homes with family. The unlucky ones show up in the morgue. Read more.

Niagara County: Director of Community Services Open Position

Responsible for planning and coordination of mental health, developmental disabilities and chemical dependency services in Niagara County. Requires 5 years administrative experience in private, nonprofit, or government program serving people with mental illness, developmental disabilities or chemical dependency with at least 2 years in overall direction of an agency, department, or program.  

 

Masters Degree in public administration, public health, hospital administration, business administration, social work, psychology, mental health nursing or New York State licensed Physician or Psychologist.
