State Hearings: Heroin abuse tough to address
About 250 people attended the New York State Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction's forum, the fourth of 14 public hearings planned statewide to solicit ideas for ways to address rampant use of heroin.  The task force is charged with reporting to the Senate by June 1 with proposed bills that could pass this legislative session.  
While heroin use is on the rise, destroying the lives of young people and their families, treatment is inconsistent and difficult to access - and there's neither a strategy nor adequate funding to address the burgeoning problem.

 

Those were among realities to emerge from a forum on heroin use Wednesday at Hudson Valley Community College. State Sen. Kathy Marchione, R-Halfmoon, facilitated the discussion among state lawmakers, local treatment providers, educators and law enforcement officials.  Read more.

Quality Measures for Psychiatric Inpatient Facilities Now Available

The federal government has added data on quality measures for inpatient psychiatric facilities to its Hospital Compare website for consumers.

 

The site now includes data from 1,753 facilities covering four measures: Hours of physical restraint use, hours of seclusion use, post-discharge continuing care plan created, and post-discharge continuing care plan transmitted to the next level of care provider upon discharge.  Read more.

Governor Cuomo Announces $95 Million to Build Affordable Housing Across the State

Funding Will Create and Preserve Over 2,000 Units of Affordable Housing Statewide.


Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced over $95 million in awards for shovel-ready projects to build affordable housing across the state. The low-interest loans and tax credits will build and preserve nearly 2,100 units of affordable housing and are expected to leverage more than $435 million in grants, loans and private resources. OMIG's Game Plan for Fighting Fraud   
The state has been moving many more Medicaid recipients into managed care. OMIG disclosed that its work in managed care "will expand this year and for the foreseeable future." The agency will focus its reviews and personnel on managed care program integrity, expanding into certified home health agencies and personal care services, as well as supported employment services, according to the work plan." Read more.  

 

The Congressional Budget Office has reduced by one-third its estimate of how much more states will spend on Medicaid in the coming decade because of the Affordable Care Act.  Read more.  

FDA proposes first regulations for e-cigarettes

 

The federal government wants to ban sales of electronic cigarettes to minors and require approval for new products and health warning labels under regulations being proposed by the Food and Drug Administration.  Read more
