'She should be here': Two girls charged in case of bullied Florida girl who committed suicide

Two girls, ages 12 and 14, have been charged with aggravated stalking for what a Florida sheriff described Tuesday as "maliciously harassing" a 12-year-old girl who jumped from a tower to her death.

The middle school students were booked into a juvenile detention center on Monday night and released to their parents under house arrest, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Rebecca Sedwick, 12, jumped to her death from a third-story cement plant structure in central Florida on Sept. 10 after being verbally, physically and cyber bullied throughout 2012 and 2013, Judd said.  Read more.

Drug Fads Through the Years

The narcotic zeitgeist seems to shift in decades.

Going back to the War on Drugs declared by president Richard Nixon in 1971, when a pair of U.S. congressman issued a report estimating that 15 to 20 percent of servicemen in Vietnam were addicted to heroin, few drugs outside of marijuana have had staying power at the forefront of drug culture.

All epidemics carry the seed of their own destruction, said Dr. Herbert D. Kleber, a professor of psychiatry and the director of the Division on Substance Abuse at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute. Supply and demand, price, more police enforcement and increased awareness by the public all contribute to fluctuations in the drug market over time - and he suspects that will be the case with New Jersey's heroin epidemic. A brief history of fad drugs in the U.S..  Read more.

Mental health screening of adolescents in today's digital age can lead to healthier and happier teens

The old African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child," seems to ring just as true today as ever before in an era of constant media exposure and hurrieyoung-cellphone-man.jpgd schedules. Sexting, cyberbullying, and even Internet gaming on top of crammed schedules and dwindling time for family togetherness is a recipe for high-anxiety that if left unchecked, can lead to depression in adolescents.  Read more
