Presidential Inauguration Celebration

Symposium Day
Janine Signore '15, a student in the Dietetic Internship graduate program at USJ with her poster presentation on "Social Media Use as a Main Source for Nutrition Information in College Undergraduate Females".
Every April, USJ celebrates Symposium Day, an annual recognition of academic scholarship, at which time
students present their research to the greater community.  This year's Symposium Day, run by co-chairs Dr. Irene Reed and Dr. Marte Ostvik-de Wilde, selected 107 student research projects for presentation.

"
Symposium Day is a fantastic opportunity for students to present papers and research to their peers and the USJ community.  It prepares students for attending conferences and presenting to a larger audience," Elizabeth (Libby) Dickerson '16 said.

"Being able to present research for the university community to see is an amazing opportunity that this school gives to its students. Personally, I would have never been able to present in front of a group of people during my first year of college, but with the help and support of the amazing faculty here and the education I received it was made possible," Julia Pelletier '16 said.

Martha (Marty) Gervasi '83, delivering the Symposium Day Plenary Address, "The Leadership Imperative".
In addition to the presentations, Martha Gervasi '83, Executive Vice President of Human Resources at the Hartford and University of Saint Joseph Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees delivered a moving and inspirational plenary address entitled, "The Leadership Imperative."

Presenters and their faculty advisors were invited to a lunch with President Free at the conclusion of the program.

1st Annual Highland Games
Team SOAR with Justin McGlamery ready to compete for the Highland Games trophy!
In honor of President Free's Inauguration and her Scottish heritage, USJ students competed in their version of the Highland Games, a traditional athletic event in Scotland. A variety of games, including the Caber Toss, Tug of War, the Standing Long Jump, Highland Steps, and Precision Test (block stacking), made for wonderful and friendly competition among the students. All enjoyed a beautiful afternoon on the quad. Congratulations to the winner of the 1st Annual Highland Games....Team B.R.A.V.E. Lassies!

Presidential Inauguration of Rhona Free
President Rhona Free with student Michelle Rowland '16 after the Inauguration ceremony.
On April 15th, Dr. Rhona Free was officially inaugurated as the ninth President of the University of Saint Joseph. The beautiful spring weather was complemented by the celebratory feeling all across the campus. Filling the The Connor Chapel of Our Lady, the University of Saint Joseph community, along with distinguished guests, family, and friends, came together to honor and officially welcome President Free to USJ. The ceremony included a performance by the Gengras Center School Choir and a gift of flowers for President Free, presented by two students from the School for Young Children. After the ceremony, the festivities continued at a reception in McGovern Hall. Special thanks to many alumni who joined us.

A Very Special Visitor
Have you ever wondered who graduated from the first class at the University of Saint Joseph? President Rhona Free invited Marie LeVan '36 to lunch on campus. Marie received her B.A. in English. She was one of only seventeen who graduated in the first class! Marie, President Free, and current students talked about what it was like for Ms. LeVan at SJC and of other accomplishments such as her beautiful poetry. We even got a chance to see her 1936 yearbook. It was a lovely afternoon with Ms. LeVan and we are fortunate to have been able to talk to her about her life!
