Regional Recognition Awards Luncheon and Annual General Meeting

Congratulations and thank you to some of our outstanding volunteers as well as Corporate Supporter, Priority Printing, who we had the pleasure of recognizing at our AGM on June 13, 2015. Anna Despins, Jamie Graham and Cecil Pizzey were presented with the 2015 Regional Volunteer Awards and Priority Printing Ltd. was presented with the Corporate Supporter Award.
Many thanks to our retiring board members who have given generously of their time and talents during their tenure with SCI Alberta - Harvey DeCock, Timothy Hill and Mark Wilson. Congratulations to Harvey DeCock who, after more than 20 years of service, was recognized as the first Honourary Board Member. Welcome to four new additions to the Board of Directors, Bryce Clarke (Edmonton), Steven Jeffrey (Fort McMurray), Cecil Pizzey (Grande Prairie) and Linda Seitz (Medicine Hat).

Blatchford Project SCI Alberta, in collaboration with the VisitAbility Task Force recently presented recommendations to the City of Edmonton regarding visitability options for the Blatchford Project, one of the largest sustainable development projects being planned in the world. It is hoped that "Accessibility" and VisitAbility will be incorporated into this community - one that is described as vibrant, livable and healthy. ETS Service Changes Starting Sunday, June 28th, 2015 Edmonton Transit System is making permanent service changes to 29 routes that travel into the downtown, with adjustments to schedules and bus stop locations. Employment Opportunity EmployAbilities is currently filling the position of Employment Facilitator for their Edmonton office. The Employment Facilitator provides individual and group facilitation in employment skills training, job placement, limited transitional job coaching and employment retention supports. Grande Prairie Bowling Group - Summer Hours!
Join us each Tuesday for Wheelchair Bowling 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to bowl or to cheer us on! Taking place at Grande Prairie's Bowling Stones Ten Pin Entertainment Center, 11005 - 106 Avenue. $4.00 per game. Cribbage, pool and other games are often available as well. Volunteers welcome.
Cash and Camping - Final Draw on July 3, 2015
Stop by the Cash and Camping tent at the Northern Casino Parking lot in Grande Prairie after 11:00am daily! Proceeds will be used by SCI Alberta Grande Prairie to help long-term clients with medical trips and equipment costs, and to develop peer programs in Grande Prairie and Peace River. Thank you to our volunteers who helped with selling tickets from April 30 - May 8. Final Draw taking place at the Prize Building on July 3, 2015.
Accessibility Awareness Month
July 2015 proclaimed Accessibility Awareness Month in the City of Grande Prairie and the County of Grande Prairie #1!
Barrier Free Access Minhas and Jeremy, representatives of the Alberta Committee of Citizens with Disabilities recently visited the Grande Prairie region to encourage barrier free access to providers of vision and dental care, and pharmacies. They spoke to three providers in Slave Lake and two in Grande Prairie. Contact Minhas Ali [[email protected] or 780-488-9088] or the Grande Prairie office directly with any suggestions or concerns.

Persons with spinal cord injury and their caregivers are invited to participate in a research project focus group. The topic for the research project is: How to support SCI patients in transition. Spinal Cord Injury Drug An interesting article published by the Spinal Cord Injury Zone talks about a spinal cord injury drug that could be administered by paramedics on the scene to help reduce spinal cord damage.
