Putting the Patient First: Campaign for Barrier-Free Health and Medical Services in Alberta

Through the years, the Alberta Committee of Citizens with Disabilities has heard people with disabilities express frustration over barriers to health care in Alberta. Some experience physical barriers; others encounter communication barriers; and many feel they are not given enough time with their doctor to have their needs met. This is only a broad description of the barriers. Indeed, the issues are deeper and more complex. In response to this, ACCD has started an awareness campaign.

Offering Edmonton electors an internet voting option will depend on the results of a Proof of Concept being conducted by the City this fall.  Its purpose is twofold: 1) To gauge the readiness of Edmontonians to use internet voting as a valid alternative in the 2013 General Election and 2) to test the technological readiness. CPA (Alberta) Friend Kuen Tang Reaches For The Top!

An Edmonton woman had the opportunity to take part in a unique climb in the Rockies, this weekend.

Kuen Tang has been a quadriplegic for 11 years, but that hasn't held her back from skiing, hiking, even climbing a mountain! Thanks to the help of a team from the Rocky Mountain Adaptive Sports Centre (RMASC), on Saturday, September 23, 2012 Tang ascended Ha Ling Peak near Canmore, an estimated 7900 ft. above sea level.

"This hike is not about me or my disability. It's about the fact that the community can help anyone with a disability, to do the impossible," said Tang. To read more on Kuen, please click here

Parkland County Developing More River Access

Though predominantly rural in nature, Parkland County also has lakes, beaches, golf courses and outdoor attractions that highlight the area's natural beauty. The North Saskatchewan River offers extensive wilderness areas teeming with wildlife. However, the high banks that enable spectacular views of the river valley in this county have also made it difficult for people to reach the river's edge.

"These new initiatives will improve access to the river," says Cross. "They will also give people a trail system they can use for recreation, and a link to communities and attractions they can visit on foot, bicycle, horseback or even cross-country skis." Click here to read more!
