Maize, KS  67101                                  Volume 10 Issue 8
316-722-0427                                         March 31, 2015

I want to thank all of you for a wonderful turn out during parent/teacher conferences, as 98% of our parents attended.  On behalf of the MCE staff, I want to thank you all for your support!

A huge thank you to our TLC parents who provided us with delicious soups during conferences.

We would also like to thank all the parents and students who came to the book fair during conferences and helped support MCE by purchasing books.  The gross amount made was $3066!!  Great Job!

I would like to announce these staff changes for the 2015-2016 school year.

  • Bill Slade (Counselor) and Bobbie Cochran (3rd Grade) are retiring at the end of this school year.
  • Christina Swedberg (.5 Vocal Music) accepted the full time Vocal Music position at Pray Woodman Elementary.

We wish them the best as they begin new chapters in their lives.

KANSAS STATE ASSESSMENT TESTING

State Assessment Testing Dates:

3rd-5th Grade English/Language Arts Assessments

 April 20th-30th

3rd-5th Grade Math Assessments

May 4th-8th

4th Grade Science Assessments

Test taking

With Kansas State Assessments right around the corner, parents are encouraged to discuss test taking strategies with their children.  Encourage your child to do his/her best!

  • Get plenty of rest the week of the tests.  You've been working hard all year learning the standards.  Don't blow it by staying up too late the night before your tests.
  • The morning of the test:  Did you know that you think better with a full stomach?  Make sure you eat breakfast the morning of the test.
  • Attendance is important!  Parents, please check with your child's teacher for exact testing dates for your child.  Please try not to schedule appointments during testing dates. State Assessments:  All Kansas State Assessments will be administered online. .
  • Be smart!  Use good testing strategies!  During the assessments be sure to use your online tools (highlighter, striker) and use your scratch paper to show your work.  Before reading the stories, read the questions FIRST, and remember you can use the manipulatives provided for the math assessment!  Success comes with strategies!
  • Be Positive!!  Those tricky problems can knock you off balance.  Take your time, slow down and think.  Don't get worried or frustrated.  Read the question as many times as you need to understand what it is asking.  Then try to solve it in the best way you know how.  Keep a positive attitude during the test.  Everyone has worked on their learning this year.  You can do great on the Kansas State Assessments!
  • I'm finished!  Not so fast--when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you are not finished yet.  Review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right answer in the wrong place or skipping a question).

JUMP ROPE/HOOPS FOR HEART

Jump Rope for Heart The week of February 9th - 12th, our MCE students jumped all over heart disease and stroke by participating in Jump Rope/Hoops for Heart as a joint effort of the Physical Education Department and the Character Education Committee. The students raised a little over $10,000 for the American Heart Association, which funds research, programs and education to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation's #1 and #4 killers.

"We are so pleased with the success of this year's event. We all had a lot of fun, and the kids enjoyed learning about the importance of physical activity and how they can play a role in saving lives." On the final day of our event we enjoyed combining our Music and PE classes to participate together in jump rope/hoops stations with the fun of music and dressing in sweats for spirit day.

The top fundraiser, once again, goes to Jordyn Bird in Mrs. Thoman's 2nd grade class.  Last year she raised $325.00 and this year she raised $505.00 for the American Heart Association.  We also had 16 students who donated over $200.00 to the American Heart Association and have earned the title of "PE Teacher for the Day" and the privilege of shadowing Coach Lind and Coach Phillips as they perform teaching duties in the gym for a day.

A huge thank you from the P.E. Department and Character Education Committee for the continued generosity of our MCE Families.

PASTA FOR PENNIES

We recently had our Pasta for Pennies event to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  We were very impressed with your generosity for such a great cause.  As a school, we raised an amazing $3,870.87 in just four days.  That is simply incredible and a testament to the awesome kids/families at our school.  The class that raised the most money, and the winners of the pasta party is Mrs. Chaffee's 3rd grade class.  They raised $407.26.  We cannot believe the success the school had and feel fortunate to be here at this fantastic building.

Thanks, MCE Character Education Committee

A NOTE FROM NURSE LONI . . . .

March is National

Nutrition Month

You can help your children reach wellness by making simple changes at home. The changes won't become habits overnight. It will take time and effort to make them part of a daily routine.

Here are a few health eating tips to get you started...

  • Make half your plate fruits and veggies.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Make at least half your grains whole.
  • Drink more water.
  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk.
  • Go lean with protein.
  • Know your portion sizes.
Find more information at eatrightpro.org
MOVING?

Students who are moving to a new school district must withdraw from Maize Central Elementary prior to leaving.  Please contact the MCE office before your student's last day, so we can make arrangements to complete the paperwork for withdrawing.
