Maize, KS  67101                                  Volume 10 Issue 7
316-722-0427                                        February 20, 2015

We will begin the Kansas State Assessments on Monday, March 9th through March 12th for our 3rd-5th graders. During this week the students will be participating in a field test of the Multidisciplinary Performance Task (MDPT).  The MDPT is a writing assessment that will be completed over two testing sessions.  From March 30th through April 9th, grades 3-5 will be tested on the English/Language Arts (ELA) portion of the test. The ELA test is comprised of four test sessions and will take a little over a week to complete. April 20th-April 30th, grades 3-5 will be tested for the math portion of the state assessment. Like the reading, the math assessment is made up of five test sessions, including a Performance Task field test. The fourth grade students will take the state science assessment from May 4th-May 8th.  The science assessment is only one session.  The teachers have been working very hard all year teaching the state standards and preparing their students for the state assessments. Please look for your child's class testing schedule from the teacher. Please take note of some ways that you can support your child:

  • Attendance is extremely important during testing, so please schedule any appointments around the testing schedule.
  • Make sure that your child is getting enough rest each night.
  • Our students need food to fuel their brains during testing, so encourage them to have a balanced breakfast.
  • Let your child know that you are aware of the testing. Encourage him/her to do well by giving them a hug or a pat on the back for their good effort.
Thank you again for supporting MCE!

Test taking

With Kansas State Assessments right around the corner, parents are encouraged to discuss test taking strategies with your child.  Encourage your child to do his/her best!

  • Get plenty of rest the week of the tests.  You've been working hard all year learning the standards.  Don't blow it by staying up too late the night before your tests.
  • The morning of the test:  Did you know that you think better with a full stomach?  Make sure you eat breakfast the morning of the test.
  • Attendance is important!  Parents, please check with your child's teacher for exact testing dates for your child.  Please try not to schedule appointments during testing dates. State Assessments:  All Kansas State Assessments will be administered online. .
  • Be smart!  Use good testing strategies!  During the assessments be sure to use your online tools (highlighter, striker) and use your scratch paper to show your work.  Before reading the stories, read the questions FIRST, and remember you can use the manipulatives provided for the math assessment!  Success comes with strategies!
  • Be Positive!!  Those tricky problems can knock you off balance.  Take your time, slow down and think.  Don't get worried or frustrated.  Read the question as many times as you need to understand what it is asking.  Then try to solve it in the best way you know how.  Keep a positive attitude during the test.  Everyone has worked on their learning this year.  You can do great on the Kansas State Assessments!
  • I'm finished!  Not so fast--when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you are not finished yet.  Review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right answer in the wrong place or skipping a question).

Keep the  childhood school memories for years to come.

You can check Skyward Fee Payment to see if a yearbook has been purchased. If not, you can either pay through Skyward or send a check or cash to the office.

Please make sure you indicate the student's name

and that it's for a yearbook.

The last day to purchase a

MCE Yearbook is March 6th.

5TH GRADE

HUMAN GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT PREVIEW FOR PARENTS
Fifth grade parents will have an opportunity to preview the Human Growth and Development videos before their children see them with their classes. The parent preview is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st @ Pray Woodman Elementary, 6:00 p.m.  At school, the girls will watch their video with counselor, Andrea Dome and the boys will watch their video with counselor, Bill Slade. If you prefer that your child NOT see these videos, you will need to sign the opt-out form that will be distributed to your child in March. If you have questions, feel free to contact Bill Slade or Andrea Dome at 722-0427.

KINDERGARTEN

ONLINE PRE-REGISTRATION OPEN,

IN-PERSON ENROLLMENT

MARCH 26TH

It's time to get ready for

Kindergarten enrollment!

Students must be five years old by August. 31st.
Online pre-registration for enrollment opened earlier this month and must be completed prior to the March 26 Kindergarten Enrollment event, which will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Maize South Elementary School, 3404 N. Maize Road. Please note that arriving early has no impact on your child's building assignment or morning vs. afternoon class placement. If you have questions, please call 316-462-8300.

Recommended enrollment assignment by last name: A thru G, 5-6 p.m.; H thru P, 6-7 p.m.; Q thru Z, 7-8 p.m. (Come any time between 5-8 p.m. if your assigned time doesn't work for your schedule.)

If your student currently attends Maize Early Childhood Center, you will also need to complete pre-enrollment and must attend the March 26 session to finalize enrollment.  Families may opt for our fee-based all-day Kindergarten option, offered for $225.00 per month.   Parents will be asked to provide a non-refundable deposit of $225.00 to secure an all-day Kindergarten slot at enrollment (this will count as your August monthly tuition payment.) Families who qualify for free and reduced lunches will not be required to pay the $225.00 deposit. This will aid the district in determining the number of teachers that will need to be hired and the amount of equipment and supplies to order.

We are looking forward to welcoming our Kindergarten students to our Maize family.

A NOTE FROM NURSE LONI . . . .

February is National Dental Health Month

It is important that your child visits a dentist every six months. The Wichita Sedgwick County Oral Health Coalition is holding their 8th Annual Give Kids a Smile Day on Saturday, March 7th from 7:30 - 3:30 at GraceMed Clinic. They are offering freeservices to children ages 3 to 12 that do not have dental insurance. You can call 316-882-1922 to make a reservation. For more information visit their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/wichitaGKAS. Your child's teacher will also have a flyer at conferences if you're interested in these services.

Did you know . . .

  • A 12-ounce can of full-calorie soda typically contains 10 teaspoons of sugar.

  • At least 28% of children begin school with untreated dental disease, impacting their ability to be successful.

Over 16% of children in Sedgwick County have untreated tooth decay according to the 2013 Kansas Oral Health Snapshot.
MOVING?

Students who are moving to a new school district must withdraw from Maize Central Elementary prior to leaving.  Please contact the MCE office before your student's last day, so we can make arrangements to complete the paperwork for withdrawing.

TARGET RED CARD

Every time we make a purchase at Target with a Target debit or credit RedCard our school gets 1% of that total! Here's how to get signed up and have your card linked to our school so we can get the proceeds.

  1. Stop by the Target on 21st and Maize and ask any cashier about signing up for a RedCard. It's completely free and easy to sign up for. There is a debit option that links with your current checking account so be sure to bring a blank check and drivers license. There is also a credit option if that is your preference! (You can also sign up online at Target.com)
  2. Once you receive your card and activate it, go to Target.com and at the top of the page it will read "REDcard" and then click on "Manage my REDCard." You will set up an account login and then follow the prompts to link the card to our school.
  3. Shop!! Remember that 1% of all we spend at Target comes right back to the school! There's no limit on this and it's a free way to fundraise!
  4. If you have problems linking your RedCard to our school, Patrick Wolz is our contact at Target. He is the Assistant Store Manager and can help if needed. His email is [email protected]
SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION

snow day With winter weather on the horizon, it's a great time to remind our families of our practice for announcing school dismissals and cancellations.

In the event of school being dismissed or canceled because of inclement weather, the district will send out an email and phone notification to each student's primary residence phone number. Calls with a recorded voice message and emails will be sent to all phone numbers and emails listed in Skyward Family Access "Family 1." Those communications will go out as early as 5:30 a.m. on the day of the closure. If a decision is made the night before to call off school, calls will go out no later than 10:30 p.m.

It's wise to make sure we have your correct contact information on file. To do so, log on to Skyward Family Access and click on "Student Information." If you are unsure how to log on to Skyward Family Access, please contact your child's school for assistance.

The district's Web site, www.usd266.com, and official Twitter account, @maize266, will be updated as soon as the decision is made to call off school. We also will contact local media about any closures.

Similarly, in the event of an emergency in your child's school, the district will use the Blackboard Connect parent notification system to notify you of the situation and
 alert you
to steps you need to take in order to reunite with your child. Voice messages will be sent to all phone numbers and emails listed in Skyward Family Access "Family 1."
