MAIZE CENTRAL NEWS
304 Academy Avenue Maize, KS 67101 Volume 10 Issue 4 316-722-0427 November 14, 2014 |
Attendance is very important in order for our students to keep up with the instruction in the classroom. I appreciate all of your efforts to make sure that your children have regular attendance and arrive at school on time. Our bell rings at 8:45 a.m. and students are counted 1/2 day absent if they arrive after 9:45 a.m. If your child is going to be absent for any reason, please call the front office (722-0427) to inform us of the nature of the absence. We will make contact with a parent if we have not received a call. Any absence that is not verified will be counted as UNEXCUSED.
With the weather turning cold please be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the day. District guidelines state that outdoor recess will be held unless precipitation is falling or the wind chill is below 19 degrees.
Parents, please park in a marked parking space when picking up your children in our north parking lot at the end of the day. We would prefer that the parents of younger children walk up to the north doors to pick-up their kids personally. If we all follow the same expectations, traffic seems to move efficiently, and students are supervised by an adult all the way to their vehicle. With cooler temperatures settling in, students will be taken to the office to wait for parents who do not arrive promptly to come in and sign them out for the day. Thank you!
We will host our annual Polar Express Night on Friday, December 12th. Join us for some holiday fun! You will find all information and the boarding pass in this newsletter.

READING IS OUR FAVORITE SPORT
|
MCE was the place to be on Monday, November 10th, when Mr. Jennings and Mrs. Pfeifer shared stories with students as part of the Book-It Principal's Challenge. They read from the beginning bell until our day was over. Students enjoyed sports-themed books and sat in our special "dugout". Thank you to our principals for sharing their love for reading!
|
The Caring Hearts Food Drive at MCE will be held November 17th-21st. We will be accepting nonperishable food donations to help Maize families in need. Some examples of nonperishable items include canned soups and vegetables, boxed meals, macaroni and cheese, Jello, cereal, etc. Your donations will be used to provide food boxes for the holiday season. There will be boxes set up around the school for students to deposit any food items they bring during the week! Thank you, in advance, for your generosity this season!

SKYWARD HEALTH INFORMATION
|
It is the responsibility of the parent to update medical information and contact numbers in Skyward Family Access during enrollment and throughout the school year. Teachers, coaches and other school staff rely on Skyward for important health information like asthma, seizures, diabetes, and food allergies. In addition to updating Skyward, the parent/guardian must also personally communicate this information to the school nurse who will educate and train the appropriate staff. If parents and/or students have questions regarding school guidelines and policies in keeping students safe and healthy at school, please contact the school nurse.
|
TIME TO ORDER YOUR YEARBOOK
|
If you did not purchase a yearbook
during enrollment, you may do so at any time.
Just send $20.00 cash or check payable to MCE.
|
Party invitations CANNOT be distributed at school. We ask that you mail invitations to personal events or parties directly to the home of the student(s) you are inviting. Parents and guardians may now opt to include your address, primary phone number, email addresses, student's school and student's grade level in the Skyward Family Access Student Directory so that other families with login rights to Family Access can view your contact information.
|
When your child is absent from school and you wish to pick up homework, you must request it by 10:00 a.m.
All homework and necessary textbooks will be available in the office after 2:00 p.m. Thank you.
|
The library media center is conducting an optional fun reading contest. From November 12th through December 10th students will keep track of reading minutes outside of school. Ask your child to see their contest reading log for more details. Happy Reading!

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
PULL TAB CONTEST
|
We have officially kicked off the Ronald McDonald House Pull Tab Contest! Parent volunteers weigh the tabs on the first Friday of each month and add them to the tally located in our entry. We are asking the kids and families to please save pop tabs, soup can tabs, dog food tabs, any kind of tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. These pop tabs go to the House to be recycled as a source of income for them. They serve families with sick children in Wichita hospitals. What a gift to be able to stay near your sick child without having to worry about the expense of food and housing!
Last year we collected over 500,000 tabs, which equaled just over 400 pounds. We would love to top our collection last year. With the holidays approaching, please ask family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to save tabs for kids. So far we have a grand total of 131 LBS!

A NOTE FROM NURSE LONI . . . .
|
Ensure your child is getting a nutritious breakfast before school. A breakfast high in protein will help your child stay fuller longer. Here are some ideas for breakfast foods that contain protein: eggs, milk, yogurt, peanut butter, bacon, or cheese. Avoid foods that are high in sugar .
As the weather turns colder, remember to dress your child appropriately. Mornings at the bus stop are often cold, so please send them with a coat or jacket.
