MAIZE CENTRAL NEWS
304 W. Central Maize, KS 67101 Volume 8 Issue 5 316-722-0427 January 17, 2013 |
I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday break with family and friends. Right before we ended for break, the Newtown, Connecticut school tragedy occurred. I want you to know that MCE and the entire district takes school safety very seriously. At MCE, we have implemented the "buzzer" system before entering the office area. People must "buzz" in to the office before entering. We have also started to lock all exterior doors at 8:45 a.m. instead of at 9:00 a.m. Our school will be practicing "lock down" procedures with students and staff throughout the remainder of the school year. As always, we will continue to review our crisis plan to insure school safety. If you ever have questions regarding school safety, please don't hesitate to contact me at 722-0427 or email me at djennings@usd266.com.
Please mark your calendars for Parent/Teacher conferences on Wednesday, February 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for 1/2 day Kindergarten and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for all day Kindergarten and Grades 1-5. We will continue with conferences on Thursday, February 7th from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you can't make it during these times, please schedule a different time with your teacher. Remember to stop by the library and check out all of the books at our book fair during this time.
This is also the time of the year when we see an increase in illnesses across the school. I would like to remind you that if your child is sick, please call the school office to report the absence. This really helps our attendance secretary.
Thank you for all of your support to help make MCE a great place for everyone!

A kindergartener in Mrs. Criswell's class, is facing a battle with a Wilms Tumor and will be undergoing chemo treatments during the next several months. Baylee underwent surgery to remove the tumor in August and the treatments will be to prevent further growth. To show our support, we will be setting aside one day a month where your children & family will have the opportunity to help the family and various organizations. Also feel free to join Mrs. Criswell's class for "Purple Power" Thursdays. Every Thursday wear Baylee's favorite color to show your support. Thank you for helping others and showing you care. If you would like more information, you can friend Baylee's Battle on Facebook.
- February 13th: Wear your jammies and bring toiletry items to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. See link below for items.
- March 6th: Break a sweat while bringing items for Dr. David Rosen's waiting room. He is our only pediatric oncologist in the Western 2/3 of Kansas. Wear your sweats and bring new/gently used dolls, barbies, crafts, coloring materials, books, puzzles, board games, movies, PS3 or Wii games, etc.
- April 10th: We learned recycling isn't silly but we can still wear our silly socks and bring all our aluminum can pull tabs for the final contest count. GO MCE!
- May 22nd: Last chance to Be "Amazing" - wear your favorite Maize shirt while helping support the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House. Bring non-perishable food and household items. See link below for items.
MCE will be participating in the Ronald McDonald House Pull Tab Contest. For this contest each class will collect pull tabs (any can tabs including soup can tabs) throughout the school year. Before each collection date every classroom's tabs will be weighed to announce the current leader. At the end of the contest the whole school will receive ice-cream for their recycling efforts and the winning classroom will receive a Movie/Popcorn/Pajama party and will also be able to attend the Weigh in Party, on April 19th, at the Ronald McDonald House. If MCE has the most pound per student weight in Wichita, we will be able to select eight-ten students to ride on a float in the River Fest Parade. So tell your friends and family and bring those tabs to school!

As an added convenience, people can receive email updates each time new information is posted. Visit www.usd266.com/bulletinboard and click "Subscribe" to sign up. Subscribers will receive emails each time new fliers are posted.
