Maize, KS  67101                                         Volume 8 Issue 3
316-722-0427                                               October 26, 2012

I'm very excited and proud to announce that Maize Central Elementary received the "Standard of Excellence Awards" on the 2011-12 Kansas State Assessment Tests. This is an outstanding award for MCE! I want to especially thank the students and teachers who have worked so hard to achieve at such a high level. To receive a Standard of Excellence award, a certain percentage of students tested during state assessment tests in the spring must earn exemplary scores, and only a small number of students can receive unsatisfactory scores on the test. This assessment is given only to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Awards are given for both grade level and building wide performance. The following "Standard of Excellence Awards" were achieved by Maize Central Elementary students and recognized by the state of Kansas:

3rd grade Reading and Math

4th grade Reading and Math

5th grade Reading and Math

Maize Central Building Standard of Excellence in Math

Maize Central Building Standard of Excellence in Reading

I would like to thank all of the moms, grandmas, aunts, and friends who were able to attend our Breakfast with Moms last week. We had a great turnout! A special thank you goes to Cindy Denning (MCE Kitchen Manager) and her team for putting together this event. This is such an awesome event for our students to have this wonderful time with family members.

POLAR EXPRESS

Polar Express
Parents, could you use some quiet time?  Would you like your children to participate in a fun evening with their friends?  Have some Christmas shopping to do?  Want to have a dinner alone?  Do we have just what you need . . .

Sign your child up for a ride on the 8th annual "MCE Polar Express"!  Our annual fund raiser to support Maize Central Elementary will take place Friday, December 7th from 3:55-8:15 pm.

The kids' evening will include a pajama party (wear your P.J.'s), crafts, face painting, snacks, exciting games, music, dinner, and much, much more.

This is offered to the Maize Central Elementary Kindergarten through fifth grade students.  The cost is $20.00 for each student and $10.00 for each additional child in that family.

All of the activities will be organized by MCE teachers and staff.  This has become part of the MCE culture and we're excited about the opportunity we have this year to make the experience even better for our kids!

Be looking for sign-up fliers coming home with your student in the near future.

ZOO'S FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS!

This year Maize Central Elementary students raised $722.00 for our annual zoo fundraiser.  We will also be donating part of this money to the Kansas Humane Society.  The students voted on which animal they would like to adopt and they chose the King Cobra.  Presentations will be made on November 1st by the Sedgwick County Zoo's Educational Department.  A big thank you goes out to all of you that contributed to make this fundraiser a big success!

There will be boxes set up around the school for students to deposit any food items they bring during the week! Thank you for your generosity this season!

BAYLEE's BATTLE

We have recently found out that Baylee, a kindergartener in Mrs. Criswell's class, is facing a battle with a Wilms Tumor and will be undergoing chemo treatments during the next several months.  Baylee underwent surgery to remove the tumor in August and the treatments will be to prevent further growth.  To show our support, we will be setting aside one day a month where your children & family will have the opportunity to help the family and various organizations.   Also feel free to join Mrs. Criswell's class for "Purple Power" Thursdays.  Every Thursday wear Baylee's favorite color to show your support.   Thank you for helping others and showing you care.  If you would like more information, you can friend Baylee's Battle on Facebook.

  • November 14th:  Bucks for Baylee - add a Hat to your Spirit Shirt and bring a dollar for the family.
  • December 5th:  Teach our children how crazy fun recycling is while raising funds for the Ronald McDonald House - style your hair crazy and bring all your aluminum can pull tabs for the Wichita Pull Tab Collection Contest - See information below.
  • January 9th:  Bucks for Baylee - team up with Baylee by wearing your favorite team apparel and bring a dollar for the family.
  • February 13th: Wear your jammies and bring toiletry items to donate to the Ronald McDonald House.  See link below for items.
  • March 6th: Break a sweat while bringing items for Dr. David Rosen's waiting room. He is our only pediatric oncologist in the Western 2/3 of Kansas.  Wear your sweats and bring new/gently used dolls, barbies, crafts, coloring materials, books, puzzles, board games, movies, PS3 or Wii games, etc.
  • April 10th:  We learned recycling isn't silly but we can still wear our silly socks and bring all our aluminum can pull tabs for the final contest count.  GO MCE!
  • May 22nd: Last chance to Be "Amazing" - wear your favorite Maize shirt while helping support the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House.  Bring non-perishable food and household items.  See link below for items.

pull tab house MCE will be participating in the Ronald McDonald House Pull Tab Contest.  For this contest each class will collect pull tabs (any can tabs including soup can tabs) throughout the school year.  Before each collection date every classroom's tabs will be weighted to announce the current leader.  At the end of the contest the whole school will receive ice-cream for their recycling efforts and the winning classroom will receive a Movie/Popcorn/Pajama party and will also be able to attend the Weigh in Party, on April 19th, at the Ronald McDonald House.  If MCE has the most pound per student weight in Wichita, we will be able to select eight-ten students to ride on a float in the River Fest Parade.  So tell your friends and family and bring those tabs to school!

ONLINE COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD TO REPLACE FLIERS

BEGINNING IN JANUARY

girl in computer

Maize USD 266 is working to utilize technology and online resources in communicating with parents, staff and the community. As part of this effort, Maize USD 266 is introducing an online Community Bulletin Board to tell parents about opportunities offered by outside groups.

The online Community Bulletin Board will be available after November 1 through the district Web site, www.usd266.com. Beginning in January, the online Community Bulletin Board will replace all paper flier distribution from outside groups.

Families can access the online Community Bulletin Board from the Parents or Community tab on the district home page. Additionally, it will be available under Quick Links or you can go directly to the page at www.usd266.com/bulletinboard.

As an added convenience, people can receive email updates each time new information is posted.

Visit

and click "Subscribe" to sign up.

Subscribers will receive emails each time

new fliers are posted.

Guidelines for organizations wishing to have information posted may be found on Community Bulletin Board page as well. In the past, paper fliers went through a district approval process before they could go home with students. Now, once a submission is approved, the district can post it right away.

The online Community Bulletin Board will lead to a significant drop in paper consumption and will help groups avoid the costs associated with producing and delivering thousands of paper fliers. It will also save time for school personnel who will no longer have to distribute paper fliers. All in all, it will be an environmentally friendly and cost effective way for you to find enriching activities for your students outside of school.

CHESS CLUB . . . Mr. White
chess club We began offering the Chess Club four years ago and we have been thrilled with the participation we've had.   Due to the great interest, we will be offering the MCE Chess Club to our fourth and fifth grade students again this year.  Our first meeting will be at 7:30 AM on Friday, November 2. You will find the permission slip and scheduled meeting dates by clicking here and also on the information sheet students should have brought home.  Each meeting will be from 7:30-8:35 am. This club is offered exclusively to our fourth and fifth grade MCE students who are either interested in improving their chess playing skills or haven't ever played before.  I spoke with each of our fourth and fifth grade classrooms and gave those students who were interested a permission slip that must be returned by Thursday, November 1.  Although younger siblings are not allowed to come, parents are more than welcome to participate.  I certainly welcome the adult help.  The club was established on the basis that chess is a lifelong game that requires players to utilize higher level thinking skills, while also encouraging them to be careful and thorough.  Our number one rule in Chess Club is, "If you see a good move, stop and look for a better one."  That is something we hope students apply in school, and then continue to live by for the rest of their lives.

If interested, please sign this permission slip and return by Thursday, November 1st.

The Physical Education department has introduced a new way of stretching to our students. We have begun teaching dynamic stretching in efforts to have our students moving as much as possible during class time. We have also been covering striking the ball with our feet. This is includes dribbling a soccer ball, passing and playing in game like situations. We will be participating in a few Halloween games leading up to the spookiest holiday of all. Then we will be moving to our striking with implements unit. We look forward to what is coming up for our students and encourage them to continue to do their best.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE = POSITIVE RESULTS
Nurse - - Stephanie Warner
smiley face

October is also known as 'Positive Attitude Month'. While people have many goals that they pursue, there is an almost universal underlying goal to all pursuits: the goal to be happy. We strive for that perfect relationship, the perfect house, a beautiful body, the approval of others, all in an attempt to be happy. Your attitude about life and the things that happen each day can greatly impact your overall level of happiness. We need to be mindful of our internal dialogue that helps us recognize our thought patterns and how they affect the way we handle situations. Some people are naturally drawn to the negative side. They see the world through a negative perspective, focusing on the bad and ignoring the good, especially when things don't go the way they had hoped. Negative thoughts, words, and attitude bring up negative and unhappy moods and actions. Nothing good comes from negative thinking and self talk. It affects you in many ways and causes additional stress. Research suggests that people with a positive attitude are happier, healthier and more successful that those with a negative outlook on life; positive thinking can also reduce stress levels.

Positive attitude is a mental attitude that expects positive results; it sees the bright side of life. People with a positive frame of mind think about possibilities, growth, expansion and success. They expect happiness, health, love and good relationships. Developing a positive attitude takes time and commitment; it does not pop into your head by itself. It is a decision you make every day. How do you develop this state of mind? In conversations use words that evoke feelings and mental images of strength, happiness and success. If you tend to talk in absolutes-stop! Get rid of phrases like 'I have no choice' and 'I can't...'. Replace them with 'I can', 'I am able', or 'it can be done'. As you go about your day expect the best. A positive attitude is a state of mind that is well worth developing and strengthening. Why not start today?

Want to earn a Pre-Sale Pass?

MCE will be partnering with Mulberry Bush Consignment (MBC) November 7th-10th selling headbands to raise money for our school programs: PE, Music, Math/Reading lab etc. We will need volunteers (parents or staff) to work two hour shifts in order to increase our percentage from the headband sales. Your job would consist of sitting at a table and assisting customers with their headband purchase (see below for dates/times). As an incentive to volunteer, you will receive one pre-sale pass for every two hours you work. This pass will allow you to shop on Wednesday night before the sale opens to the public on Thursday.

What is the MBC sale? Three times a year over 200 families sign up to sell their new and gently used items. Items can include clothing & shoes (all seasons; sizes preemie thru pre-teen), toys, games, books, puzzles, shoes, costumes, room decor, arts & crafts, nursing & feeding supplies, diapering & potty training supplies, strollers, car seats, high chairs, bikes, and much more! The November sale is typically over-flowing with toys!

Where is the MBC sale? The sale and headband fundraiser is located at the Maize Recreation Commission's Multi Purpose Room (City of Maize Building).

What if I miss the MBC sale but want to order headbands? Order forms will be going home with students the week after the sale in case you are unable to attend or would like to purchase additional headbands.

Click on your choice below

for a sneak peak at the awesome headbands!

adjustable, non-slip headbands-will fit small children

So get your Pre-Sale Pass(es) today by emailing [email protected] with a time slot(s) that works with your schedule:

  • Wednesday Nov 7th: 5-7 pm & 7-9 pm (if you sign up for 5-7 pm shift, you can come shop at 4 before you work the booth)
  • Thursday Nov 8th: 9-11 am, 11-1 pm, 1-3 pm, 3-5 pm, & 5-7 pm

  • Saturday Nov 9th: 8-10 am, 10-12 pm, & 12-2 pm (We would like to have two people on this shift in order to complete inventory)

*Sign up for as many shifts as you want to get more pre-sale passes. The booth will have a table and chairs so you can bring an infant or older child if needed.   Note: The sale does get rather busy so you may not want to bring a "busy" toddler that may wander.
