Cards for Kids
| The Community Service Organization is asking for your help. They have teamed up with Cards for Hospitalized Kids to provide uplifting and handmade cards to children.
Here's what they need from you: stop by their table outside 1201 this week, 12 p.m.-2 p.m.and make/sign a card! It is absolutely free and will only take a few minutes. This small gesture could make a huge difference to a child in a hospital.

Quiz Bowl Extravaganza |

Two events. Both with themes that pay homage to Seattle's inspired grunge movement, drinks and a Jeopardy-style challenge. Interested?
If you have plans this weekend, consider rescheduling and stick around campus for the AOSA Quiz Bowl on Friday or the Pre-Optometry Quiz Bowl on Saturday. On Friday, $5 will get you pizza and drinks and loads of entertainment - the event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. If you can't make it, consider buying a raffle ticket this week outside of the Lecture Center, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. (must be present to win, unless faculty or staff member).
The fun continues on Saturday when six pre-optometry clubs square off for the #preoptqb title. Students from Augustana College, Benedictine University, Purdue University, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, and University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will compete in several challenges. If you're on campus between 2:00-4:00 p.m., stop by the Lecture Center to cheer on the students during the final challenge of the day.

What I learned: There's Always More to Learn
|
And, just like that, another Practice Opportunities Symposium is in the books. Students had the chance to make connections with more than 40 ODs, practice owners and corporate representatives, and learn about the many ways they can potentially practice after graduation.
"The event is so special to ICO because it allows students the opportunity to engage and sharpen their networking skills with alumni and other optometric professionals whom they will work alongside as associates and partners in the near future," said Daphne Anderson. "It prepares them and begins the relationships, which we hope to be long-lasting through their career."
Heard around POS
"With the debt that students have these days, they often feel like they have to work for someone else. I just want them to know that it is still possible to open up your own practice if you put the work in. The Practice Opportunities Symposium is their opportunity to learn about real-life optometry.
I tell students all the time they might as well take advantage of these opportunities now, while it's free, while they're a student...because once they leave here they'll have to pay for consulting by the hour!"
- Mindy Nguyen, OD '05, Practice Management panelist
"I would talk to doctors in areas that you don't even think you're interested in, because life changes, and your niche sort of evolves. It's just very helpful to have a lot of different contacts, to know what's out there, and that can evolve into something that combines multiple interests."
- Lanae Knapp, OD '09, Resideny panelist
"You might know who you're going to meet, but you don't know where that relationship is going to take you. The possibilities for what the people you meet can do for you are endless, and that shouldn't be undervalued or overlooked."
- Aaron Tai, 2nd Year Student, first time attending Photos galore can be found here.
