I hope you are enjoying the holiday season. At Rural Development, we are blessed to have had a year full of accomplishments. Yet, our success is not possible without our great partners. Supporting each other, we are able to build vibrant, sustainable communities and improve the quality of life for all of North Dakotans.


An example of one partnership is with our telecommunication providers. USDA has made substantial investments to support their efforts in providing high-speed Internet across the state. Working together, we were proudly able to announce that North Dakota is leading the nation in fiber optic access. This technology is changing how we live and work while directly benefiting the state's economy. 


Thank you to all of our partners. We look forward to working with you in the new year and keep North Dakota leading the way.

North Dakota leading the nation in broadband coverage 

The state's broadband achievements were announced at a press conference with David Crothers, General Manager at NDATC; Jasper Schneider, Acting Administrator for USDA Rural Utilities Service; and Seth Arndorfer, CEO of Dakota Carrier Network.

On average in the United States, only 5% of households have fiber Internet, but the North Dakota Broadband Report illustrates the remarkable coverage in the state as most homes and businesses have access to a fiber connection. To learn more, read the news release or view the report at


Report: ND leads the nation in fiber optic access

North Dakota leads the nation in high-speed fiber optic access to the Internet, according to a report released Monday.
 
"We have made it a priority to deploy a high-speed Internet network throughout the state," said Jasper Schneider, acting administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's rural utilities service. "As a result, North Dakota is once again leading the way and has a plan for statewide coverage."

Schneider and other officials working on broadband development in North Dakota gathered in Fargo on Monday to unveil a report highlighting the fact many homes and businesses in the state now have access to fiber optic cable, viewed by many as the fastest and most reliable way of linking to the Internet. Read full story


Editorial: USDA partnership investments building North Dakota

A recent report, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) titled, "Made in Rural America," highlights the commitment USDA has made to strengthen rural economies. The report also contains a state-by-state fact sheet that highlights specific USDA investments in rural businesses, manufacturing, energy, water and other infrastructure development. It also outlines how USDA is helping rural communities attract businesses and families by investing in housing and broadband service. Read more.

Rural Energy for America Program (REAP)
The Notice of Solicitation of Applications for the Rural Energy for America Program was published December 29, 2014. Applications are being accepted under the program, which is designed to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy costs and consumption. REAP has two types of funding assistance: Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements Assistance and Energy Audit and Renewable Energy Development Assistance Grants. Please read the notice as there are different application deadlines and funding allocations.  

Rural Business Development Grants: 

Applications are being encouraged under the Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) Program. On a competitive basis, the RBDG program will make Enterprise and Opportunity grants eligible to public bodies, private nonprofit corporations, institutions of higher education and rural cooperatives. Public bodies include States, counties, cities, townships, incorporated towns, authorities, and Indian tribes. 


Enterprise grants may be used for the acquisition or development of land, equipment, capitalization of revolving loan funds, training and technical assistance. Any project funded by an enterprise grant should benefit small and emerging private businesses in rural areas. Opportunity grants may be used for community economic development, technology-based economic development, feasibility studies and business plans, leadership and entrepreneur training, and long-term business strategic planning. RBDG funds will be available on a statewide basis and set-aside funding for Native American and REAP Zone projects. Application deadlines and program funding will be determined at a future date. Program Announcements  

   

Rural Health Care: Altru Health System, based in Grand Forks, received a grant through USDA's Distance Learning and Telemedicine program to to establish a video conferencing network. The digital software will provide rural patients with access to medical professionals via a secure network, which allows them to be diagnosed and treated in their own communities. Read more


Broadband: USDA is soliciting applications for grants to establish broadband in rural areas where it is currently unavailable. Funding is provided through the Community Connect Program. Learn more here.
