Building North Dakota

State Director Jasper Schneider

Greetings!

With the holidays fast upon us, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you for a wonderful year. We truly have great partners that help us deliver the mission of the agency: the building of a rural state like North Dakota. Your investments help our communities, people and support industry and population growth.

Cheers to the season and for the many good things to come in 2014.

Expanding medical facilities in western North Dakota

Architectural rendering of the new Tioga Medical clinic.
As the population in western North Dakota continues to boom, it is putting a strain on medical facilities and staff. To help address this issue, USDA Rural Development has provided financing for several new and expanding medical buildings in Williston, Crosby, Tioga, Bowman, Richardton and Dickinson.

Recently, the Prairie Business Magazine highlighted this topic in the article: Expansions: Booming Bakken prompts medical expansions.

Corn Growers Value Added Summit

Fargo

The first annual Corn Growers Value Added Summit was organized to advance ideas, discussions and business strategies for the benefit of entities interested in developing or expanding corn-related businesses. State Director Schneider spoke to the group about the different USDA programs that support value added activities with a focus on the Value Added Producer Grant and Business programs.

BIA and USDA working together

USDA Rural Development officials from North Dakota and South Dakota met representatives from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Great Plains Regional office. The discussion focused on how to pool resources to provide housing on tribal reservations.

USDA has several housing programs providing opportunities for homeownership, necessary home repairs, and rental housing. The BIA offers the Housing Improvement Program (HIP), which is a safety-net program that provides grants to American Indian families for the cost of services to repair, renovate & replace housing. The program assists those that live in substandard housing or are without housing and have no other resources for assistance.

Seeking Grant Applications

USDA Rural Development recently announced two upcoming grant application deadlines.

1. Value Added Producer Grant: applications are being accepted for grants to help agricultural producers enter into value-added activities intended to give them a competitive business edge. In fiscal year 2012, for example, Dakota Pride Cooperative in Jamestown received a $49,000 grant to expand their reach into South Korea by marketing identity-preserved, non-genetically modified soybeans. 2. Rural Business Enterprise Grant: applications are being accepted for grants to finance and facilitate the development of new and existing businesses. Learn more
