Join Carefree Mayor David Schwan and representatives from Desert Foothills Land Trust to learn more about the newest preserves in our community - three properties totaling 60 acres of conservation land in Carefree!
We will share information about DFLT activities in 2012, as well as goals for 2013, and members will have the opportunity to vote on board nominees.
Light refreshments will be served.
Celebrate your new preserve! Donors, volunteers and community supporters of Desert Foothills Land Trust have enabled us to partner with the Town of Carefree to accomplish local open space protection!
The new preserves protect a significant wash, wildlife habitat and cultural resources in Northern Carefree. The Town used Open Space Development Fees to fund the acquisition of 30 acres of land. The landowner also granted 10 acres to the Land Trust, and another nearby landowner, Paul Van Weelden, donated another 20 acres to the Town.
The Land Trust will work with the Town to steward these properties to protect their conservation values, including local wildlife habitat and the open landscape of our community. We are particularly grateful to the following partners who participated in this effort:
- Mark Hazelton and Russ Lyon Realty, who waived their fee for facilitating this transaction.
- Grace Schoonover, who sadly passed away in late December, but generously shared her knowledge of the site and surrounding archaeology over many years.
- The landowners who generously participated in the conservation project through donation and sale of land.
- The Town of Carefree, who sought the most open space and conservation impact for their Open Space Development Fee funds. They partnered so generously with the Land Trust to identify and secure the protection of a critically important area!
