This week we are noticing many plants and flowers changing in the garden. Our pumpkin vines have flowers, corn is getting taller, and beans are starting to reach out with "tendrils" so they can climb. This is a great time to observe and learn more about the life cycles of plants and trees. Our playground pecan tree is dormant for the season and we have noticed many oak trees sprouting as squirrels are busy hiding acorns for winter.

Many children have been asking questions about how their own bodies work so we are also learning about parts of the human body with some fun body tracing and labeling lessons in both Spanish and English.
Ms. Lisa's class welcomes their new hermit crab, Rosie, and special thanks to Ines's family for donating the crab, new habitat, and all their supplies. If you would like to babysit them over a weekend please send Miss Lisa a note and she will sign you up.
Thanks also to Macy's grandma, Betty for visiting with us and reading to the class. Thanks also to Chithra, (Uma's mom) and Kendra (Hayes's mom) for taking the time to share a book with the class.

We had another great week here in Lower Elementary! The book reports have been wonderful!!! The children are getting more and more creative with their presentations. And the written reports are getting more thorough. It's exciting to see how the children are progressing in this area!

Many of the children are working on special research projects and maps. We did another experiment this week to show how water expands and rises when heated. The enthusiasm for science is growing in our class! Along with all the special lessons, the children are continuing to work on their math and language lessons.
We have also been trying to reinforce having good manners and being respectful to each other. We have been going over things such as staying seated during lunch, eating over the table, and cleaning up your own mess.
Thank you to those who have donated yarn! We still need more if anyone else would like to contribute. We really appreciate it!

Students are busy working on their cultural ship building projects this week and they are looking great. We are also going to begin working on a medieval shield with an individualized Coat of Arms that students will make and present at the cultural festival. This is an extension of our visit to Medieval Times and our history studies, "Story of the World," where we continue our study of the Vikings.

As you are aware, this year we have been doing a daily quiet, reflective practice period called "Golden Period." This week, we are excited to begin a new program called "Inner Explorer" as part of our "Golden Period." This program offers daily guided focused-awareness practice to help students ease their worries and tensions, develop greater focus, self-awareness and a general sense of confidence and well-being.
We are continuing our testing preparations this week with daily Math Minutes exercises for 4th, 5th and 6th grades. Students practice a variety of math and geometry skills in a format similar to the testing environment. We are also asking students to do the test preparation on Moby Max leading up to the standardized testing. Just simply click on "Test Prep" and choose math three times per week for 30 minutes and language two times a week for 30 minutes. Please contact Mr. Greg with any questions.
Students had a great time on their second visit to Gracie Tampa to practice Jui-Jitsu. What a wonderful opportunity for students to go off-campus and learn such valuable life skills and have fun at the same time.

We hope everyone had a good MLK day on Monday. This week as we resumed to our school schedules once again we started Tuesday with our normal Monday routine and our trip to Hubert park for art and playtime. Also, on Tuesday we finished our Grammar land unit!
Wednesday we worked on our manager jobs followed by our mentoring session with Upper El. We also got the chance to have our playground time with them as well. Thursday, was our weekly trip to the YMCA where we took a cardio strength class.
Lastly, today we had our second weekly Jui jitsu lesson that included Upper El. Throughout the week we continued to work hard on our Story of the World projects and we have started doubling up on our Finance Park work.
Starting next week, we are collecting bottle caps and soda can tabs for action projects. Please help us out by collecting some and sending them in.

LOWER ELEMENTARY:
We read a story about a pigeon that went to the moon out of friendship, hoping that the moon will no longer feel lonely! As an extension of this reading, students "filled up" a suitcase with the necessary items according to the place they were visiting. All the pieces of clothing and miscellaneous contained in their luggage were labeled in Spanish. This was a very productive week.
UPPER ELEMENTARY:
Our lessons were geared around the use of the letters "R" and "RR". We had a dictation followed by its translation into English. A 25 word vocabulary list was used for Conversational Spanish and individual reading. Students are more confident in their diction and ability to read.

MIDDLE SCHOOL:
Our "Paso a Paso" textbooks provided topics about going shopping, caring for our pets, professions and skills among others. The rich vocabulary in these readings was a tremendous help in our writing and oral exercises for the week.
TRIVIA FACTS about Ecuador: 1.The majority of balsa wood produced in the world comes from Ecuador.
2.Quinine, the first drug used to prevent and treat malaria is obtained from the bark of the Cinchona tree grown in Ecuador.
3.Guinea pig is considered a delicacy in this South American country.
