This week we discussed the natural cycle of life as we buried 'Pinchy" our Hermit crab. This event turned into a biology lesson as we were able to see what a hermit crab looks like without his shell. We hope to get our other hermit crab- 'Hermie" a playmate in the near future.

In Science we set up our Rootvue (Thanks to Ines), now the children can see what happens underground as a carrot, radish and onion grow. The children picked carrots and lettuce from our garden and made their own salad!
We talked about Dr. Martin Luther King and how one man made such a difference to the lives of so many.
Maria Montessori would be proud to see many of our friends adding, multiplying, and subtracting this week using her Golden beads. |
Lower Elementary |
We had a very busy week in Lower Elementary! The children have had lessons on more types of lines, some cooperative learning activities, and we did a special experiment with acids and bases. We also did a fun lesson the Infinity Street. This lesson is designed to help the children with place value and reading big numbers.

We had a new friend join our class this week! Levn is a 3rd grade boy who moved here from Idaho. He has blended in perfectly with our class, and we are so happy to have him!
Don't forget the book report is due on Tuesday, January 20. Many of the children are very excited about the classic book they have chosen, and we are excited to see their presentation! |

This week students enjoyed getting started on our cultural projects. One aspect of this is the Viking Longboat project. Each student will make and decorate a working boat made out of a milk carton, which we will race at the cultural day as a part of our presentation. This aligns with our history studies. Right now we are learning about the Vikings in our reading and discussion of the Story of the World. Students also enjoyed a video from the History Channel on the Vikings and their ships.
Students' were very excited about our visit to Medieval Times Theater. Students were able to visit a Medieval village, see an educational presentation learning about customs of the time period, and enjoy a period lunch and show. Thank you to all the parents who made the drive to Kissimmee to make the trip possible.
In a few short weeks, we will have the annual standardized testing week. We are beginning our preparations this week with Math Minutes exercises each day. We are also asking students to do the test preparation on Moby Max for the next three weeks leading up to the standardized testing. Please contact Mr. Greg with any questions.
As a reminder, Monday the 19th is Martin Luther King Jr. day and there will be no school. Next Friday we will continue our off-campus trips with our second visit to Gracie Tampa to practice Jui-Jitsu. |
Middle School |
We had a fun week in middle school. On Monday, we started our new Florida Virtual School courses. On Tuesday, we went to art and finished our roses.
On Wednesday, we mentored in Upper Elementary. We helped them with everyday work and cultural day projects.

Thursday we took a spinning class at the YMCA and Friday we went to Medieval Times in Orlando. We ate lunch, walked around the medieval village, and watched the medieval show. In science, we started chapter 16 and finished chapter 15.
In Spanish we learned about the weather and made our own extended weather reports for different countries around the world. We are also having our chapter 11 math test next Tuesday. For Story of the World we are making collages for each section of the book to present on cultural day. We had a great week and I can't wait for the next one.

Spanish |
LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had an intense review about days of the week, months of the year, colors, and fruits. Our practice also included rhymes, words, songs, and a guessing game; all in "Espanol". UPPER ELEMENTARY: We read a story about special gifts or magical powers. The main elemental powers we reviewed were fire, water, and wind. We also discussed the power of invisibility! We followed that with an entertaining review of vocabulary were we used numbers or key words that represented a folk story, tale, or a fairy tale. For instance, "hair" and "tower" would be Rapunzel, while "mirror" and "7" would be Snow White. Students worked in pairs and we all had fun learning Spanish.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: "All About the Weather" and related vocabulary was our goal for this week. We had oral and written exercises. On Wednesday, we had a pop quiz with very good results. Our Grammar Lesson was about adverbs and their place in a sentence. Students wrote an extended weather forecast on their own.
TRIVIA FACT: Many Latin American authors have used the element of magic in some of their best seller books. Among them, we can cite Gabriel Garcia Marquez from Colombia, Mario Vargas Llosa from Peru, Isabel Allende from Chile, and Octavio Paz from Mexico.
