Welcome back, everyone! We have enjoyed hearing about all the various travels and adventures from the children over the break. The children have come back with renewed energy and have been really focused on their work.
We visited the continent of Australia this week and tied that in with a lesson on different land forms focusing on Islands. We discussed which animals live in water and which live on land.
We had a discussion about different body coverings and their purpose. "Why don't Polar Bears need to wear clothing?" "How do humans stay warm?" "Why do we have hair on our body?"

Walker practicing with scissors. |
Our garden has blossomed. The children have tasted different kinds of lettuce and some are recording their experiences in their journals. We will be working more outside as soon as the weather warms up.
Ms. Denise's class welcomed Walker Smith this week to their class. Walker is 3 years old and his big brother is Wyatt. We are so happy to have him!
We recapped some Grace and Courtesy lessons and are practicing them daily. |

We trust you all had a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year! It was nice to come back and hear the children share about their break. We had a great week in Lower Elementary!
This week the children got right back into their lessons. We had a lesson on the life and works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The children were able to listen to some of his music and then did a project in their sketch books about his life. Many of the children were doing experiments, special research and many math and language lessons as well.
We could still use some yarn donations. If you have any that you would like to donate, we would really appreciate it!

Upper Elementary |
Welcome back and happy New Year to all. We would like to wish everyone a year filled with excitement, discovery, love and joy.
This week we are all getting back into the swing of our work cycle. We are continuing our study of the Story of the World in which we are beginning our preparation for the Medieval and Renaissance cultural festival. We are also continuing our Grammar Land study, literature groups, geometry and math.
One aspect of our cultural festival is the study of the Vikings. Each student will make a Viking longboat. Please have your student bring in a clean, quart sized milk carton and a paper bag next week as part of this project. They will be presented on cultural day.

Naveen and Michael practicing at Jui Jitsu |
As part of our off campus PE program, we visited Gracie Jui Jitsu. The kids had a wonderful time and enjoyed the activities. Not only does participating in martial arts offer physical fitness and self-defense, but also builds focus, integrity, courtesy and teaches us how to work with others.
Next Friday is Medieval Times in Orlando on January 16th. This trip supports our cultural studies. Students will tour the Medieval Village, view an educational presentation on the culture of the time period and enjoy the show and lunch. We need to meet at school at 8:30am and will return around 2pm. The cost is $37 per student and is due by January 9th. We need four drivers.
Class Pet: We are still looking for MPK sponsors for the rest of the year. We are asking for $12.00 to cover the costs of the class pet. This includes food, bedding, bulbs for the heat lamp and any other items needed for his care. |

We hope everyone had a great time during the holidays and welcome back! This was a good week coming back to school and we are now adjusted back to our normal schedule. On Tuesday we had our normal trip to Hubert Park for art and playtime and we were given the chance to retake our lowest graded tests. Wednesday, we started mentoring Upper Elementary and had our Earth Science midterm. On Thursday morning, we participated in our first body combat class at the YMCA. Today, we are took our first Jiu jitsu lesson at Gracie Martial Arts Tampa. Have a great weekend!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: FELIZ ANO NUEVO! BIENVENIDOS! Happy New Year and welcome! We are off to another fun journey learning and practicing Spanish. We read a short story about a peacock taking a stroll in a garden. Some animals were admiring him and commenting on the vivid colors of his plumage and its elegant walking. Many adjectives were used by the animals to describe the beautiful bird they had never seen--and that was precisely the object of the reading. We also reviewed different animals and their respective habitats. We even had time to make booklets labeled in Spanish and to sing and dance "The Kookaburra Bird".
UPPER ELEMENTARY: Various listening exercises took most of our time this week. Students listened to a list of words and were asked to write only the letters that stood for the beginning, middle, and ending sound of each word. This was very challenging and kept their interest and focus on the lessons. The vocabulary was also the source of our Conversational Spanish topic. MIDDLE SCHOOL: We started our week with a very "rich" theme, " Precious and semi-precious stones." We learned/reviewed the name of 10 precious stones in Spanish. Then we composed a combined paragraph about garnets; since they are the birthstone for January. Students also wrote individual compositions about their preferred stone or their own birthstone.
TRIVIA FACT:Colombia produces 55% of the planet's emeralds, and their quality places them among the most coveted gems. The mines of MUZO yield the deep green emeralds, which are the most beautiful, scarce, valuable, and exclusive; only found in the deepest depth of Colombia.
