It's hard to believe that we are one week away from Winter break! The children have been busy making books about winter, snowmen and parts of a Penguin. We have been painting polar bears and decorating snowflakes.
We are learning about the different geometric solids in our classroom - this week we learned what a RECTANGULAR PRISM is, and the kids have been having fun pointing out that a tissues box, bar of soap and other items in our world are rectangular prisms. A new favorite song we have been singing is the "Gardener plants a seed'.
Thank you to Giselle for bringing in 2 new CD's for us to enjoy during work and rest time. If there is a family that is willing to take our Hermit Crabs home over the holidays please let us know. We also have many weekends available throughout next year. Thank you to those families who have adopted them over the weekends so far!
Next week we continue our journey of celebrations around world. |
Lower Elementary |
The excitement is growing day by day! We had a wonderful time celebrating St. Nicholas Day last Friday. Some of the children put on a puppet show, and others made posters and presentation on St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas even visited our class and brought all the children treats!

This week the children are continuing their work in math and language and cultural studies. They had a lesson on
economics. They learned about different types of communities and the people who work in those communities. We will continue with more lessons on economics throughout the year. The children have also been doing some discoveries with liquid measures. They are using a measurement set to find out how many cups in a pint, quarts in a gallon, and so on.
We have been practicing our carols for our visit to Westchester Gardens on Wednesday, and the children are doing well! Please let us know if you are available to drive.
Book reports are due this Monday, Dec. 15. They will do their presentations during the week as they come in.
Some of our students get hungry during the morning work time, but they do not have a snack. If your child has an Evos lunch during the week or pizza on Friday, you may still send in a snack for them to have. Thank you for your help! |
Upper Elementary |
Along with the coming of the chilly weather and the quickly approaching winter break, students have found the spirit of the holiday season. Everyone is enjoying making ornaments for our visit to Westchester Gardens next week and we have begun practicing for our caroling along with the 6-9 classroom and middle school.
Students' are also working on a special holiday surprise for parents. While I can't give away what it is, I can say that they are turning out beautifully. Students' will bring the gift home on the Thursday before break.
We will also announce the "Secret Snowflake" names on Friday. As a reminder, the gifts are to be no more than one dollar each, with the exception being Friday, which will be five dollars. We are asking that students' bring all the gifts on Monday and that they are wrapped with the individuals name on it who will receive it. Please also number them one through five. Remember, it is a secret!

We would still like to welcome parents of our students to come and share their holiday traditions with us. This is an important opportunity for our kids to learn about the spiritual traditions of different cultures and to develop an appreciation for the diversity of the community we live in. Please contact Mr. Greg or Ms. April if you wish to present to our class.
Class Pet: Thank you to all the families who have donated to support MPK (our snake). While we have support through the end of the year, we now need families to sponsor MPK starting in January. You can sponsor a full month or even a partial month if you wish. We ask for $12.00 per month. For the winter break, while I am happy to care for MPK over the two weeks of break, if there are families who will be in town and would like to take MPK home for the break, please let us know.

Volunteering at the Metropolitan Ministries. |
This week has been running very smoothly, as usual. We had our chapter 9 test in Algebra on exponents, scientific notation, advanced distributing and harder rational expressions. In earth science we have started chapter 15 on earth's atmosphere. In reading/writing workshop we are learning about symbols and characterization. In our units we are continuing Finance Park as well as grammar land. Also we have been preparing our proposals for FedEx day and our social skills projects.
Thursday was our trip to Metropolitan Ministries where we volunteered and helped out those who needed it this Christmas season. Like every year it felt great to help out.
Have a great rest of the week!

Spanish |
Lower elementary: Our musical repertoire was enriched with more songs. We added our Spanish versions of Jingle Bells, Rudolph, and the ever popular and contagious "Feliz Navidad". We also practiced some new rhyming words and completed a worksheet with the letter "D". We were gladly surprised with the visit of some Middle School students who graciously shared with us the information on some December holiday symbols. Upper Elementary: Reading, translations, and conversational Spanish were our goal for this week. Topics varied. Both oral and written exercises completed our class assignments. Flash cards were another tool used to encourage fluidity in the Spanish language. Individual crossword puzzles using holidays related to vocabulary rounded up our review. Middle School: Students have been "busy elves" this week! They have been researching and translating topics such as the origins of bells, candles, wreaths, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, greeting cards, Hanukah, Rudolph, and the Bethlehem Star among others. They shared their valuable findings with the children in the Lower and Upper Elementary grades.

World's largest human Christmas tree. |
Trivia Facts: December 2012: The largest floating Christmas tree was lit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 542 ton tree was built on 11 enormous platforms in Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.
Dec 3, 2014: Nearly 3000 people gathered outside Honduran National Palace in Tegucigalpa to create the world's largest human Christmas trees.
May you all have a blessed Christmas and a healthy, prosperous New Year. Onward to January 2015! |
Office Notes |
We still need drivers for the holiday singing at Westchester Gardens on Wednesday, December 17th. All elementary and middle school students are going. The facility is located at 3301 Mc Mullen Booth Rd., Clearwater.
If you are able to drive, please check your calendar and let us know if you can help out. Just call the school office or send an email.
The cars will leave at 10 am and will return to school around 1:30 pm. At Westchester Gardens, the children will sing for the residents and patients, present them with small gifts they have made and then have a tour of the facility. They will be treated to a pizza lunch before returning to school.
